Colorectal, General and Laparoscopic Surgery

Dr. Gurpreet Singh-Ranger, BSc MSc MS FRCS(Eng) FRCSGlasg(GenSurg), is a highly accomplished Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with over 20 years of clinical and academic leadership. Based at Upper River Valley Hospital, Canada, he specializes in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, benign proctology, breast cancer surgery, and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr. Singh-Ranger is a committed educator and Adjunct Professor at Mount Allison University. He has extensive experience mentoring medical students and trainees, developing innovative curricula, and leading surgical research internships. He serves as an ATLS Instructor across North America and is actively involved in healthcare leadership as President of the Specialty Council, New Brunswick Medical Society. His career reflects a strong commitment to advancing surgical care, research, and education globally.

Main Areas of Interest

  • General Surgery (Comprehensive Scope): Expertise across the full spectrum of general surgery, including abdominal, gastrointestinal, and soft tissue procedures, with over two decades of clinical leadership.
  • Colorectal Surgery: Specialist in laparoscopic and robotic colorectal procedures, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, incisional hernia repair, and benign proctology (rectal prolapse, anal fistula, hemorrhoids).
  • Breast Cancer Surgery: Extensive experience in breast cancer management, including breast-conserving surgery, mastectomy, and sentinel lymph node biopsy, with a strong research background in oncological outcomes.
  • Endoscopy (Diagnostic & Therapeutic): Skilled in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, with expertise in diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic interventions for a wide range of GI pathologies.
  • Acute Care & Trauma Surgery: Certified ATLS Instructor with extensive experience in trauma management, emergency surgical procedures, and critical care, mentoring trainees in North America and internationally.

 

Techniques or Procedures the Fellows Will Gain Exposure to include:

  • Diagnostic & Therapeutic Endoscopy: detailed structured guidance on how to perform  upper and lower GI endoscopy, including polypectomy, biopsy, hemostasis, and therapeutic interventions for gastrointestinal bleeding and strictures. Candidates will not be able to perform these procedures independently however.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery: Operative exposure as first assistant to minimally invasive approaches for colorectal disease, abdominal wall reconstruction, hernia repair, and benign proctology, with emphasis on safe operative techniques and perioperative care.
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: Operative exposure as first assistant in sentinel node mapping and biopsy for breast cancer, with a focus on oncologic safety, precision, and post-operative outcomes.
  • Breast Cancer Surgery: Comprehensive oral training in breast-conserving surgery, mastectomy, alongside management of surgical oncology patients, with structured case based scenarios.
  • Management of Complex Surgical Conditions & Complications: Exam level guidance and preparation in diagnosing and managing a broad range of surgical emergencies and complications, including acute care, trauma, postoperative complications, and multidisciplinary decision-making.



 

Introduction & Core Surgical Exposure

  • Orientation to surgical units, clinics, and OR workflow
  • Observation of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy
  • Exposure to outpatient colorectal and breast surgery clinics
  • Case-based teaching on perioperative care and surgical pathways

Laparoscopic & General Surgery

  • Observation of laparoscopic colorectal resections and hernia repairs
  • Exposure to complex abdominal wall reconstruction and benign proctology
  • Continued observation of therapeutic endoscopy procedures
  • Tutorials on colorectal cancer management and surgical complications

 Breast Cancer & Acute Care Surgery

  • Observation of breast-conserving surgery, mastectomy, and sentinel node biopsy
  • Attendance at breast cancer clinics and oncology MDT meetings
  • Exposure to trauma resuscitations and emergency surgical cases
  • Participation in journal clubs and morbidity & mortality (M&M) reviews

Complications & Academic Development

  • Observation of surgical complications and complex case management
  • Case-based discussions on acute surgical decision-making
  • Introduction to ongoing surgical research and academic writing
  • Final reflection, feedback, and certificate of completion with Dr. Singh-Ranger

Candidates can only manage patients under the direct supervision of the host.

Candidates may scrub for surgery and be first assistant with the host surgeon.

The fellowship will be based on observership and assisting of cases, with detailed teaching and debriefing using case based scenarios.

A clinical trainee licence from the CPSNB and RHA approval for the fellowship will be required. The clinical trainee licence is currently at no cost, but dependent on RHA approval for the candidate as well as fulfilment of CPSNB criteria for application.

The fellowship would be best suited to medical students, residents, and consultants in the first 3 years of practice.



 

Accommodation may be available at a modest cost either near the hospital or in Woodstock, the nearest town. Assistance will be provided to help arrange suitable housing.
