Participants consistently rated the Ophthalmology Fellowship program 5/5. They appreciated the program for its hands-on clinical research experience, supportive and knowledgeable mentors, networking opportunities, and cultural and professional exposure.
Review and Highlights:
The most valuable aspect of my fellowship was the chance to observe advanced clinical and surgical practices in cornea and ocular surface diseases. Prof. Giannaccare and his team provided outstanding guidance and mentorship, always taking the time to explain each case thoroughly and discuss the clinical reasoning behind every decision. Their openness and academic excellence made the experience truly inspiring.
Improvements:
The fellowship was remarkably well organized in every respect. The clinical exposure, mentorship, and overall coordination were excellent, and I honestly see no significant areas for improvement. Everything exceeded my expectations and reflected a high level of professionalism and dedication from the entire team.
Visa Process:
As an EU citizen, I did not require a visa. However, I believe international participants would benefit from a brief orientation document outlining visa options and requirements according to their nationality.
Travel and Accommodations:
I stayed near the city center of Cagliari, which was ideal for both the hospital and leisure activities. I highly recommend accommodations around Via Roma or Piazza Yenne — both areas are safe, pleasant, and well connected by public transport. For dining, Ristorante Dal Corsaro and Antica Cagliari offer excellent local cuisine and great service.
Overall Rating:
5 – Outstanding. The fellowship was academically enriching, exceptionally well organized, and an inspiring experience that reinforced my passion for ophthalmology.
• Review:
My fellowship experience was rewarding, both professionally and personally. I had the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning, collaborate with outstanding mentors, and gain valuable insights into advanced clinical practices and research methodology.
• Highlights:
The most valuable part of the fellowship was the opportunity to be involved in research activities, which greatly enriched my academic development. While the clinical sessions were insightful, the language barrier due to Italian being the primary language posed some initial challenges. However, Dr. Giannaccare was exceptionally supportive in bridging this gap, ensuring that I could follow along and benefit from the clinical experience.
• Improvements:
It would be helpful to provide a more detailed orientation at the beginning of the program, including a clear schedule and expectations.
• Visa Process:
Dr. Giannaccare’s invitation letter was very helpful during the visa application process. It’s important that the letter clearly states the purpose and duration of the fellowship, and explicitly mentions that the fellow will not be involved in direct patient care. This clarification is crucial for a smooth visa approval process. I recommend applying early and confirming with the consulate the appropriate visa type for observational or research-based fellowships.
• Accommodations:
Look for accommodations within walking distance or with easy public transport access to the institution. I recommend checking local short-term rental platforms or reaching out to previous fellows for suggestions. As for food, there were several great eating spots nearby offering a variety of cuisines—especially good for those with dietary restrictions.
• Overall Rating:
5/5 – The experience exceeded my expectations and contributed significantly to my professional development. I would highly recommend this fellowship to future applicants.
