Mentored Fellowship in Lung Transplantation

Dr. Rodrigo Alonso is a researcher in the field of respiratory medicine, and over the past ten years he has devoted himself almost exclusively to lung transplantation. He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator in approximately 50 indexed articles. His main research interests include infectious complications in lung transplantation, the study of acute and chronic rejection in lung transplant recipients, and the clinical management of the major medical complications associated with this procedurey.

He has authored/co-authored several peer-reviewed articles, collaborates with medical professionals and institutions, and contributes to improving diagnostic practices in pulmonary medicine.

  • Our Unit has been dedicated to lung transplantation for the past 18 years, with an annual volume of approximately 80 procedures. We have developed particular expertise in high-risk cases, especially lung transplantation for advanced pulmonary arterial hypertension.
  • Fellows will be given the opportunity to take part of the dynamics of the unit taking part in the rounds, clinical discussion and management of all those patients admitted to our unit. 
  •  Fellows will participate in clinical training sessions in lung transplant paitients, as well as in the clinical sessions of the ICU and the anesthesiology department, respiratory department service , and lung transplantation sessions with Thoracic surgery . They will also be encouraged to present their work orally at a group meeting at least once before they complete their visit. 
  •  Fellows will be given the opportunity to participate in both clinical and experimental studies carried out during the stay. - At the end of training the fellow will receive a certificate attesting training attendance
  • The student acquires knowledge and skills in the management of infectious  pathology associated with lung transplantation. 
  • The student acquires knowledge and skills in the management of  mmunosuppressive treatment for lung transplantation. 
  • The student will acquire knowledge and skills in the selection of lung transplant  candidates. 
  • The student will acquire knowledge and skills in the selection of candidates for  lung transplantation due to primary pulmonary hypertension, the classification  of risk levels, pharmacological therapeutic management and the different  bridging options to transplantation. 
  • The student will acquire knowledge and skills in the management of  immunological phenomena associated with lung transplantation, acute, chronic  and antibody-mediated rejection. 
  • The student will acquire knowledge and skills in the outpatient management of  lung transplant patients in a non-transplant center.

  • Physicians from hospitals that refer patients who are candidates for lung transplantation (LTx) and are interested in participating in the post-transplant follow-up of these patients.
  • Pulmonologists from centers with a LTx program who wish to learn about a different approach to clinical practice than their own unit.
