Dr. Rodrigo Alonso Moralejo is a researcher in the field of respiratory medicine, and over the past ten years he has devoted himself almost exclusively to lung transplantation. He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator in approximately 50 indexed articles. His main research interests include infectious complications in lung transplantation, the study of acute and chronic rejection in lung transplant recipients, and the clinical management of the major medical complications associated with this procedure.
He has authored/co-authored several peer-reviewed articles, collaborates with medical professionals and institutions, and contributes to improving diagnostic practices in pulmonary medicine.
· Lung Transplantation & Clinical Management: Comprehensive training in referral criteria, patient selection, pre-transplant evaluation, and post-transplant follow-up, with emphasis on evidence-based management protocols in intensive care, inpatient, and outpatient settings.
· Immunosuppression & Rejection: In-depth understanding of immunosuppressive therapies, their clinical applications, dose adjustments, and side effects, along with diagnosis, treatment, and case-based learning on acute and chronic rejection.
· Infectious Complications in Transplantation: Specialized focus on viral (e.g., CMV), bacterial, and fungal infections in lung transplant recipients, with training in prophylaxis, diagnosis, and management strategies tailored to transplant patients.
· Cardiopulmonary Disorders & Rehabilitation: Clinical insights into managing pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and other cardiopulmonary conditions in transplant candidates, complemented by physical rehabilitation approaches for optimizing recovery and long-term outcomes.
· Multidisciplinary & Translational Clinical Training: Exposure to collaborative care through joint meetings with pulmonology, intensive care, thoracic surgery, and infectious disease teams, integrating theoretical teaching, clinical practice, and real case resolution to prepare fellows for advanced lung transplant care.
Training placements in the multidisciplinary TxP unit will consist of three parts:
• Theoretical Training: in the form of presentations in which written teaching materials will also be provided, including management protocols for the most common situations experienced by lung transplant patients and a follow-up schedule.
• Practical Training in which participants will participate in the daily care activities of the unit, sharing daily visits to post-transplant patients in intensive care, on the hospital ward, and in consultation, as well as attending the weekly clinical session of the Transplant Unit.
• Resolution of clinical cases: among course students, advised by the unit's physicians on how to proceed with their diagnosis and treatment.
· Clinical Care of Lung Transplant Patients: Direct participation in daily ward rounds, intensive care follow-up, and outpatient consultations, gaining hands-on experience in the continuum of transplant patient management.
· Management of Immunosuppressive Therapy: Practical training in the initiation, adjustment, and monitoring of immunosuppressive regimens, including recognition and management of side effects.
· Diagnosis & Treatment of Rejection: Exposure to real clinical cases of acute and chronic rejection, including interpretation of pulmonary function tests and application of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
· Infectious Disease Management in Transplantation: Applied training in prophylaxis, early recognition, and treatment of viral (CMV and others), bacterial, and fungal infections specific to lung transplant recipients.
· Case-Based Clinical Decision-Making: Structured resolution of transplant-related clinical cases under faculty supervision, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical problem-solving.
· Multidisciplinary Team Integration: Participation in weekly transplant, pulmonology, and intensive care meetings with thoracic surgeons, cardiologists, and infectious disease specialists to develop collaborative and translational clinical skills.
· Rehabilitation & Long-Term Care: Training in physical rehabilitation strategies and patient self-care education to optimize recovery and quality of life post-transplant.
