Research Service Voucher

European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR)

The Research Service Voucher provides rapid funding of up to EUR 5,000 in expenses for purchasing core services, technology/equipment, and other resources in support of rheumatic and musculoskeletal (RMD) research projects. The goal is to give investigators with limited research funds the support they need to nurture a small idea with big potential that could lead to larger subsequent funding or aid in completing a funded and impactful RMD project. Researchers can either:

  • Add new data collection to an existing (“parent”) RMD project to develop new research that is distinct from the aims of the parent project.
  • Collect information de novo, outside the context of an existing project, to support the development of new RMD research.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Direct Relevance to Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMDs)

EULAR funds research and training specifically in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) — including autoimmune arthritis, connective-tissue diseases, bone/joint disorders, etc.

Whether your proposal is basic science, translational, clinical, public-health or health-services research, the central focus must be an RMD or an issue highly relevant to rheumatology (diagnosis, care, outcomes, quality of life, treatment, methodology, etc.)

Predictor: The RMD/rheumatology link in your proposal must be central and explicit, not peripheral.

2. Fit to the Specific EULAR Funding or Support Mechanism

EULAR offers a variety of grant/support types — and each has different expectations.

Mechanism / Support TypeWhat It’s Best For
Research Vouchers / Research Service Voucher / Publication VoucherSmall expenses, pilot data, core services, reagents, data analysis, publication costs — ideal for small-scale or early-stage projects.
“Improving Research Methods/Capabilities” Grant (€50,000)Development of new methods, tools, protocols, or laboratory/analysis pipelines for RMD research. Not hypothesis-testing per se, but methodology / capacity building.
Health-Professionals (HPR) Research Grant (~€45,000)For projects led by non-MD health professionals (nurses, physiotherapists, rehab specialists) with impact across ≥ 3 EU countries — often clinical care, education, implementation, patient-centered studies.
Scientific Training / Fellowship / Short-/Long-Term Training GrantsFor early-career researchers or clinicians who want to train / visit another EULAR-country centre for clinical or lab work. Great for building skills, collaborations, and exposure.
Collaborative / Multi-centre / Network / Consortia Grants or PartnershipsWhen your project leverages multiple centres, international collaboration, shared resources, data/patient registries, or cross-country studies. EULAR emphasizes collaboration across Europe.

Predictor: Choose the mechanism that matches your career stage + project maturity + goals. Mis-matching (e.g. submitting a large-scale trial under a small-grant voucher) usually lowers success.

3. High Scientific Rigor, Solid Methodology & Realistic Scope

For method-development or regular research grants, EULAR expects a well-defined project plan, clear aims/milestones, and realistic expectations given the funding level.

For HPR grants or international multicentre studies, quality design, clear protocol, multi-country coordination, and strong feasibility are essential.

Predictor: A concise, hypothesis- or objective-driven plan, with realistic deliverables, increases the odds of success.

4. Innovation — Particularly in Methods or Care Delivery

The “Methods/Capabilities Grant” explicitly funds novel methodological tools, novel lab or data-analysis protocols, or technologies that improve RMD research quality.

Projects that propose new workflows, better diagnostics, improved outcome measures, or enhanced multi-centre / cross-border collaboration are favored.

Predictor: If you propose something methodologically novel or that improves research infrastructure, that’s a strong advantage.

5. Multidisciplinary / Multi-Country / Collaborative Approach

Especially for HPR or larger initiatives, EULAR favors cooperation across European countries, often requiring involvement from multiple nations for HPR grants.

Use of EULAR networks — such as their imaging/trial-centre networks, outcome-measures libraries, or data registries — strengthens proposals.

Predictor: A collaborative, cross-institutional (preferably cross-country) team — especially with complementary expertise — increases competitiveness substantially.

6. Demonstrated Impact on Patient Care, Research Capacity, or Standardization

EULAR wants outputs that help improve research quality, patient outcomes, or care pathways. For method-development grants — this means tools or protocols that other labs/clinicians can adopt.

For HPR grants — emphasis is on improvements in clinical practice, education, patient management or care delivery across Europe.

Projects aligning with EULAR’s broader mission (reducing burden of RMDs, enhancing care, building capacity) tend to stand out.

Predictor: Clear pathway to impact — whether via better research infrastructure, better care, or improved patient outcomes.

7. Realistic Budget & Efficient Use of Funds

For small grants/vouchers, realistic and well-justified costs (core services, reagents, modest equipment use, data analysis) are expected. Oversized budgets or poorly justified high-cost items are viewed negatively.

For fellowships/training grants, costs are capped (travel stipend + monthly support for defined period). Proposals must justify stay duration, training programme, and deliverables.

Predictor: Lean, well-justified budgets aligned with aims → more likely funding.

8. Suitably Qualified Applicants + Institutional or Host-Unit Support

For research or method-development grants: applicants should have relevant expertise in rheumatology/RMD research, institutional backing, and infrastructure to carry out the project.

For training or fellowship grants: applicants must identify a host institution in another EULAR country, obtain acceptance, and lay out a training plan with objectives and deliverables.

Predictor: A strong CV + institutional commitment or a credible host-institution + collaboration — improves feasibility judgment.

9. Timely, Well-Written, Compliant Proposal

Applications should follow EULAR’s formatting and submission guidelines exactly (especially for training grants).

Clarity, structured writing, clear aims and methods, and an explanation of output or impact — all help reviewers assess utility, feasibility, and value for money.

Predictor: Clear, crisp writing and compliance with guidelines can tip decisions in favor of good proposals.

10. Strategically Positioning as Foundation for Larger or Future Work

Method-development grants and vouchers can be used as stepping stones — helps build capacity, generate pilot data that can support larger EU or national grants. EULAR even offers a Voucher for EU grant development (helping prepare bigger proposals).

If you can show how your pilot or methods-grant outputs will feed into larger studies (clinical trials, consortia, multi-centre registries), that is often viewed favorably.

Predictor: Framing your proposal as part of a long-term research strategy helps justify investment.

⚠️ Common Pitfalls / What Weakens EULAR Applications

Submitting a purely generic basic-science proposal with weak or no connection to rheumatic or musculoskeletal disease.

Misalignment of project scale to funding mechanism (e.g. large ambitions under small voucher grant).

Poorly defined aims or unrealistic deliverables given time/funding.

Overly expensive or unjustified budget without clear output.

Lack of collaboration or single-centre, siloed projects — especially in schemes favoring multi-centre or cross-country efforts.

Weak or missing host-institution commitment in training/fellowship applications.

Poor presentation, unclear writing, or non-compliance with EULAR submission guidelines.

🎯 What This Means Strategically — If You're Applying to EULAR

First, choose the correct funding/training mechanism based on your career stage, project scope, and goals.

Ensure your project is directly relevant to RMDs — not a generic immunology/biology study.

If you’re developing a new method, tool, or protocol — highlight its utility for the wider rheumatology research community.

For clinical / health-professionals / implementation-oriented research — plan for multi-country collaboration (if possible), patient engagement, and clear impact on care.

Write a focused, realistic 2–3 aim plan, with clear milestones and outputs. Don’t over-promise.

Build a lean, justifiable budget. Use voucher or small-grant routes if appropriate.

If you're early-career, consider a training grant/fellowship to build skills and networks — especially via cross-country placements.

Where possible, use the opportunity to generate pilot data, which can be leveraged for larger national/EU grants.

Emphasize translation, collaboration, sustainability, and broader impact (research capacity, patient care, standardization).

  • Researchers and Health Professionals from all EULAR-affiliated countries.
  • Although the primary metric for evaluation will be the quality of the proposal, in the event of over-subscription and otherwise equitable adjudication of merit, weighting will be given to those applications coming from regions in which rheumatology research has received lower levels of research support on a historical basis, or that has been under-represented in abstract submission rates to the EULAR Congress.
  • Investigators are eligible to receive one voucher award per year. Only one application per research group per cycle will be accepted.
