Dr. Yu-Jui Yvonne Wan is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, Davis. With a PhD in Experimental Pathology from Drexel University, she has over three decades of experience in biomedical research, spanning academia and the National Institutes of Health.
Her research focuses on diet-related metabolic diseases, liver carcinogenesis, and precision medicine, integrating nutrition, toxicology, and bioinformatics across translational models. She has authored more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and is widely recognized for her contributions to understanding the gut–liver axis, metabolic dysfunction, and cancer biology.
Dr. Wan has held several leadership roles, including Vice Chair of Research and Director of major research programs, and has led multidisciplinary collaborations advancing innovative therapeutic and diagnostic approaches in liver disease and metabolic disorders.
• Diet–gut–liver axis in metabolic disease and cancer
• Diet and nutritional regulation of metabolism and systemic immunity
• Biomarker discovery for metabolic stress, disease progression, leading carcinogenesis
• Using clinical data to guide study design: translational approaches linking nutrition, metabolism, and clinical outcomes
• Preclinical models to study liver and colon diseases, including cancer, as well as other conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and metabolic disorders (e.g., type 2 diabetes, obesity)
• Molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic disease, inflammation, and carcinogenesis
• Diet–microbiome interactions and their role in systemic biology and disease
• Identification and application of non-invasive biomarkers (serum, fecal, urine)
1. Study Design & Translational Approaches
Focus on how clinical data informs research questions and study design. Emphasis on translational frameworks linking diet, metabolism, and disease outcomes. Interactive discussions encouraged, with fellows bringing questions for in-depth exploration.
2. Experimental Methods & Disease Models
Overview of preclinical models used to investigate liver and colon diseases, cancer, and metabolic disorders. Discussion of methodological approaches relevant to studying disease mechanisms.
3. Diet–Microbiome–Host Interactions
Exploration of how diet influences the microbiome and systemic biology, and how these interactions contribute to metabolic disease and carcinogenesis.
4. Challenges, Biomarkers & Clinical Translation
Identification of key challenges in the field, including variability in diet and disease models. Focus on discovery and application of non-invasive biomarkers and their role in disease monitoring and clinical translation.
