The Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) is a coalition of five Virginia colleges and universities, NASA, state educational agencies and other institutions representing diverse STEM education and research. VSGC offers a wide range of student opportunities including fellowships, scholarships, internships, research experiences, and student flight projects.
Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) provides STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Bridge Scholarships of $2,000 to students who will be sophomores or juniors. Students from any federally recognized minority group in STEM and enrolled full-time in a program of STEM at one of the five Virginia Space Grant member universities are strongly encouraged to apply. The scholarship program introduces students to the STEM pipeline as well as NASA and VSGC internships. Students make connections to current VSGC scholars, fellows, faculty and research related to NASA’s mission.
Deadline
March 15
From past award cycles and guidance:
✔ Relevance to NASA / aerospace mission:
Projects describing how the research contributes to NASA priorities (e.g., science, exploration systems, aeronautics) are more competitive.
✔ Strong mentorship:
Having a committed faculty mentor with relevant expertise strengthens proposals.
✔ Clear and feasible research design:
Even at undergraduate levels, proposals that articulate achievable milestones and methodologies stand out.
✔ Academic performance:
Higher GPA and strong academic records are consistent with selection advantages.
✔ Institutional endorsement:
Graduate fellowships often require matching funds from the department, indicating institutional commitment.
✔ Start early: Most VSGC deadlines are in late February–March annually.
✔ Engage a mentor early: Develop your research proposal with faculty guidance.
✔ Tailor to NASA relevance: Explicitly link your work to NASA mission goals.
✔ Gather strong references: Select recommenders who can speak to your research potential.
✔ Emphasise impact: Articulate how your research contributes to STEM and aerospace fields.
