$5,000 Challenge Award for Trainees
The PhRMA Foundation and the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy (JMCP) are partnering on a Trainee Challenge Award competition that will award trainees for outstanding manuscripts addressing artificial intelligence (AI) in managed care pharmacy.
The PhRMA Foundation will provide the Challenge Award — a prize of $5,000 — to the first author of up to five winning papers, and JMCP will publish all accepted manuscripts.
JMCP is a peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy.
Scope of the Call
As AI rapidly transforms managed care pharmacy, it is essential to share learnings across communities. Trainees are often at the forefront of innovations. This call for papers invites trainees working on AI technologies and applications to share their work relevant to managed care pharmacy and its impact on patient care.
We welcome a wide range of submissions in any of JMCP’s article categories: Research, Research Brief, Systematic Review, and Viewpoints. Articles that address one of the following broad topic areas are preferred:
✔ Direct alignment with priority domains
Proposals must clearly intersect with one of the Foundation’s key research areas — especially where there’s a plausible bridge to medical innovation or improved therapeutic impact. PhRMA Foundation
✔ Clear, focused research plan
Well-scoped aims with defined outcomes and appropriate methodology are essential, particularly for fellowship proposals where training value is paramount.
✔ Institutional support & mentorship
Especially for fellowships, having strong letters from supervisors demonstrating institutional commitment and mentoring plans strengthens competitiveness.
✔ Feasible milestones
Given modest award durations (often 12–24 months), reviewers look for projects they can realistically judge within the time and budget available.
✔ Potential to catalyse future funding or impact
Applications that articulate how the award positions the investigator for future success — e.g., larger grants or publications — tend to be stronger.
✔ Match the scheme to your career stage:
Predoctoral for advanced PhD candidates, postdoc for training progression, and starter grants for early faculty independence.
✔ Articulate training value: For fellowship proposals, clearly describe how the experience advances your skills, network, and research trajectory.
✔ Budget tightly: Ensure budget requests (stipend or project expenses) are justified and permissible under the scheme.
✔ Highlight relevance: Clarify how your work addresses one of the Foundation’s core scientific themes.
✔ Seek strong mentorship letters: Especially for fellowships, demonstrate senior support.
| Programme | Target | Focus | Typical Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Predoctoral Fellowships | PhD candidates | Drug discovery, delivery, translational science, value assessment | $30,000/yr stipend PhRMA Foundation |
| Postdoctoral Fellowships | Early postdocs | Advanced biomedical/translational training | $60,000/yr stipend PhRMA Foundation |
| Faculty Starter Grants | Early-career faculty | Independent research start | $100,000 for 1 yr PhRMA Foundation |
