Predoctoral Fellowship candidates must be a full-time graduate student in a proposed course of study directly related to cancer. Applicants must apply for the Fellowship under the direction of a Sponsor, a scientist (tenured, tenure-track, or equivalent position) who can serve as a mentor to the Fellow (See Appendix 2 for sponsor requirements).
The NJCCR Predoctoral Fellowship Grant is designed to attract and retain talented scientists pursuing a career in cancer research in New Jersey. The NJCCR Predoctoral Fellowship Grant funding will support research projects total of up to $100,000 for two (2) years. Awards are made to a QRI for support of the Fellow, who must work under the direct supervision of the designated Sponsor.
Funding Details
Stipend: Up to $40,000 per year, inclusive of fringe benefits.
Fringe Benefit Rate: Should not exceed 12% for those directly working on the project.
Supplies and Equipment: Allows purchase of supplies and equipment with a justification and quote.
Travel Budget: Up to $1500 per year if needed.
Notification and approval by the NJCCR shall be required prior to any travel spending. International travel is not allowed.
Indirect Costs: Up to 15% (inclusive) of the total budget.
Institutions may supplement stipends; however, supplements may not come from other full-time fellowship awards or from NJCCR funding.
Applicants may serve as teaching assistants while holding an NJCCR Fellowship. However, teaching duties and other non-research commitments must not exceed 20% of an applicant’s total professional effort during the fellowship period, unless prior approval is obtained from the NJCCR.
From past award patterns and programme descriptions, competitive NJCCR proposals usually show:
✔ 1. Strong NJ Relevance
Projects or training plans focused on cancers affecting New Jersey populations — including population studies, disparities research, or preclinical work anchored in NJ institutions — tend to align best with the Commission’s mission. NJ.gov
✔ 2. Clear, Well-Defined Aims
Articulated research questions, specific aims, and a feasible pathway to deliverable outcomes are essential. Projects that are too broad or unfocused compete poorly at the peer review stage.
✔ 3. Rigorous Methodological Design
Competitive submissions detail hypotheses, methods, statistical or analytical plans, power considerations (where relevant), and contingency strategies.
✔ 4. Institutional & Mentor Support
For fellowship awards especially, a strong letter from the host research group, clear mentorship plan, and evidence of institutional support strengthen applications.
✔ 5. Pathway to Further Funding
Reviewers often favour applications where the output (e.g., preliminary data, pilot results) is convincingly positioned to lead to larger state, national, or private competitive grants (e.g., NIH R awards, foundation grants). This demonstrates return on investment potential.
✔ Demonstrate New Jersey ties — use CVs, letters, and residency verification to underline state relevance if eligible. NJ.gov
✔ Match funding scale to scope — e.g., pilots/fellowships should be achievable within 1–3 years with clear metrics.
✔ Engage appropriate mentors — particularly for postdoctoral fellows, a strong, established research mentor increases reviewer confidence.
✔ Prepare for an LOI stage — some cycles may use preliminary screening prior to full applications.
✔ Use state cancer data — incorporating New Jersey cancer surveillance data (if relevant) can contextualize population health proposals.
| Funding Type | Target | Focus | Typical Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-Doctoral Fellowships | Graduate students | Cancer research training | Stipend & research support NJ.gov |
| Post-Doctoral Fellowships | Early-career researchers | Mentored cancer research | Annual fellowship support NJ.gov |
| Project & Pilot Grants | Institutions & investigators | Original cancer research | Variable (direct/indirect costs) NJ.gov |
| Targeted Cancer Funds | Specialized projects | E.g., Breast cancer research | Statutory allocations Justia |
🔍 When NJCCR Is a Good Fit
✔ You are based at a New Jersey research institution or partnering with one.
✔ Your work focuses on cancer biology, prevention, treatment, epidemiology, or outcomes.
✔ You are an early-career scientist seeking fellowship support tied to cancer research.
✔ You need pilot or seed funds to generate data for larger national or foundation grants.
• Applicants for this opportunity must be candidates for the PhD, DrPH, EdD, MD, or equivalent graduate degree and have identified a dissertation research project.
• Applicants must be a citizen of the United States or permanent resident at the time of application submission. Proof of status may be required upon request.
• NJCCR prefers to support predoctoral applicants who have completed most of their coursework and are dedicating at least 80% of their effort to cancer-related research. At the time of application, applicants are expected to be no less than two years from the anticipated completion of their dissertation or thesis work.
• Predoctoral Fellowships are two-year awards of $50,000.
• Teaching and other non-research responsibilities should not exceed 20% of an applicant’s time without permission from the NJCCR.
• NJCCR acknowledgment shall be required on all materials or information relating to the grant.
NOTE: Predoctoral fellows who meet the eligibility criteria may elect to apply for a Pilot Grant if it is the more suitable option. Applicants pursuing a second fellowship will not be supported under this award. Applicants currently holding or who have accepted another 5 predoctoral fellowship – whether simultaneous or overlapping with any other entity are not eligible to apply. If funding is obtained from another agency, it is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI) and Sponsor to promptly notify the NJCCR.
