The Foundation’s mission is to foster the development and dissemination of technical aids, with a particular emphasis on enhancing mobility, alongside supporting scientific research to create new aids and restore mobility and communication capabilities for individuals with disabilities.
Project grants are offered for durations of 1, 2, and 3 years.
Applicants may apply for project funding of up to 1,000,000 SEK per year for a maximum of three years.
The Foundation permits overhead costs of up to 20 percent of the total requested amount.
All research involving humans or experimental animals must be approved by a research ethics committee before it can begin. This ensures that the project adheres to strict ethical guidelines and laws, and protects the rights and well-being of participants.
In cases where ethical approval is required but has not yet been applied for or granted, funding may be awarded but will not be disbursed until the applicant has supplemented the application with the date of the approved ethical permit, the reference number, and the name of the ethics application.
Projects resulting in medical devices are subject to specific regulations to ensure quality and safety, in accordance with the EU Regulation 2017/745 (MDR). For more information and the definition of a medical device, please visit the Swedish Medical Products Agency’s (Läkemedelsverket, LMV) website: Is it a medical device?.
The Promobilia Foundation encourages early consideration of LMV’s requirements during the development process and adherence to all specified requirements before any clinical trial of a medical device is initiated. Please note that different rules apply depending on whether the product to be tested is CE marked or not.
If you have a pilot project requiring testing, we suggest seeking funding for a one-year period initially, followed by a subsequent application for a multi-year grant. Similarly, for projects with a duration of one year or less, it is advisable to apply for this grant.
For projects extending over several years, you may seek research funding for a maximum duration of three years. Furthermore, there exists the possibility to request continuation funding. Upon approval, the Foundation issues a multi-year letter of intent, with annual decisions being rendered subsequent to the submission of progress reports.
If you have an ongoing multi-year project grant, you may only submit a new application when you are close to final reporting. Reporting for the ongoing project (both scientific results and financial reporting) must be approved before a new project may be initiated. This policy is intended to ensure that resources and time are prioritised for ongoing projects before new funding is awarded.
Applications for project grants are submitted via the Stiftelsen Promobilia digital application system. All information must be entered directly into the application form, unless otherwise stated.
Contact details for the applicant.
Contact details and signature of the certifying manager (Head of Department or equivalent).
An overall description of the project, including a popular science summary in Swedish.
The research plan is entered directly in the application form and may not exceed five (5) A4 pages, corresponding to approximately 15,000 characters including spaces.
The following headings are included in the application form:
Figures and/or the reference list must be submitted as a separate appendix.
The reference list may include a maximum of ten (10) scientific articles of particular relevance. Links to PubMed or DOI should be provided where possible.
For the applicant and any co-applicant(s).
A detailed project budget together with a brief justification of the proposed costs.
Applications are submitted via our digital application system SBS Manager. An SBS Manager account can be created using an email address and password or with Swedish BankID. A Swedish BankID is required to submit the application. The certifying manager is also required to have a Swedish BankID.
The application form may be completed in English; however, the project title and the popular science summary must be written in Swedish.
Strong applications to Promobilia typically include:
✔ Mission Alignment
Proposals must directly address disability, mobility, independence, assistive tech, or rehabilitation research with clear relevance to individuals with functional impairments.
✔ Clear Impact Pathways
Present measurable outcomes that demonstrate how the research or innovation will translate into improved mobility, communication, or quality of life for people with disabilities.
✔ Feasible, Well-Designed Methods
For project grants, reviewers look for sound study design or development plan, with realistic timelines and milestones over 1–3 years.
✔ Ethics & Regulatory Awareness
Competitive proposals pre-address ethical approvals and, for device-related work, regulatory requirements (e.g., MDR compliance) before project start.
✔ Institutional Support & Track Record
For institutional project grants and fellowships, strong host support letters, prior relevant experience, and infrastructure readiness strengthen reviewer confidence.
✔ Use the foundation’s templates: Adhere to the specified research plan structure (often capped at ~5 pages).
✔ Write a lay summary in Swedish: Promobilia requires a popular science summary in Swedish.
✔ Ensure ethical compliance: If your project involves people or animals, secure ethics approval before funding is released.
✔ Clarify dissemination plans: Explain how results will be published or translated into practice benefiting target populations.
| Funding Scheme | Target | Focus | Typical Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Project Grants | Swedish institutions & eligible individuals | R&D for assistive tech & disability research | Up to 1 000 000 SEK/year (1–3 yrs) |
| Promobilia Fellowships | Early-career researchers | Establish research career in disability science | ~1 000 000 SEK/yr (2–3 yrs) |
| Personal Scholarships | Individuals with product ideas | Early product development | Variable (smaller) |
🔍 When Promobilia Funding Is a Good Fit
✔ You’re conducting innovation or scientific research that improves mobility, independence, or quality of life for persons with disabilities.
✔ You have a feasible project plan with societal impact pathways and ethical compliance.
✔ You are an early-career researcher (within ~3 years of PhD completion) aiming to build a career in disability research.
✔ You have a product concept ready to transition from idea to prototype.
Organisations must be Swedish universities, colleges, hospitals or equivalent.
In some cases, projects abroad may be invited to apply.
Private individuals may also apply if their project meets the criteria.
Promobilia does not support industrial projects, ongoing routine operations, procurement of assistive devices for personal use, or livelihood grants.
