POSNA Microgrant

Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America

Amount:$2,500 maximum per grant
Grants/Year:N/A
Duration:1 year
Focus:

Some suggestions for types of projects that could be funded are:

  • Support a resident or student to do research or travel on a medical mission.
  • Projects from smaller institutions that don’t get larger POSNA grants.
  • Nontraditional grants not necessarily for research, educational ideas, advocacy, QSVI.
  • Outside the box ideas: Start-up funding for a creative research project, pilot research project, proof of concept research to generate power analysis, statistical assistance for a research project, supplies to explore a new idea, assistance with creating an educational video for POSNAcademy, or other development of a creative idea.
  • Travel and research for a history project
  • Use of funds: Funds for microgrants cannot be used for indirect costs for faculty, salary, administrative or overhead expenses.
  • Microgrants should not be used to fund POSNA committee activities.
Description:The objective of the POSNA Microgrant Program is to advance musculoskeletal care for children and adolescents through education, research, quality, safety and value initiatives, advocacy, and global outreach to children in underserved areas.

The microgrant program is dedicated to promoting the breadth of its membership and to encourage members who do not typically receive major POSNA research awards to advance their creative ideas.

**New for 2026: The Roshen N. Irani Microgrant. Find more information on posna.org.**
Scoring Criteria:

Five domains are considered and scored:

  1. Relevance to POSNA mission, ability to advance POSNA mission.
  2. Originality, novel, innovative
  3. Methods (quality and clarity of the study design or description of the project)
  4. Investigator/institution background and potential for completion of project
  5. Feasibility of budget, timeline. Potential for this project leading to next step.

Applicants are encouraged to consider research topics that align with the POSNA Clinical Research Agenda. Grants will be awarded to the highest quality applications; however, when grant scores are similar, preference will be given to the applications that best align with POSNA's clinical research priorities.

Additional Information:The project should have at least one major outcome measure of success identified at the start of the project and addressed at completion.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong relevance to pediatric orthopaedics (highest predictor)

This is the most important predictor.

POSNA prioritizes research involving:

  • Pediatric fractures and trauma
  • Hip disorders (e.g., developmental dysplasia of the hip, Perthes disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis)
  • Scoliosis and spinal deformity
  • Limb deformities and limb reconstruction
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Pediatric sports injuries
  • Musculoskeletal infections
  • Pediatric orthopaedic quality and safety
  • Global pediatric orthopaedics

Projects should clearly demonstrate relevance to improving musculoskeletal care in children and adolescents.

2. Clinical significance, impact, and relevance to the POSNA mission (very high predictor)

POSNA explicitly lists significance, impact, and relevance to the POSNA mission among its primary review criteria.

Competitive proposals typically demonstrate:

  • Improved patient outcomes
  • Better quality of care
  • Enhanced patient safety
  • Evidence-based clinical practice
  • Broad applicability to pediatric orthopaedics

Clinical relevance should be clearly described in the abstract, specific aims, title, and study design.

3. Innovation and originality (very high predictor)

Innovation is a formal scoring criterion across POSNA grant programs.

Successful projects often include:

  • Novel surgical techniques
  • Innovative implants or technologies
  • New diagnostic or imaging methods
  • Original clinical or translational research
  • Creative quality-improvement initiatives

Pilot projects with potential to evolve into larger research programs are encouraged.

4. High scientific quality and rigorous methodology

Reviewers formally evaluate the scientific quality of the proposed study.

Competitive applications include:

  • Clear hypotheses
  • Appropriate study design
  • Robust methodology
  • Sound statistical analysis
  • Realistic timelines
  • Clearly defined outcome measures

Methodological rigor is essential regardless of whether the project is basic science, clinical, or registry-based.

5. Strong investigator track record and research environment

POSNA evaluates the track record of the investigator(s) as part of its scoring process.

Competitive applicants generally demonstrate:

  • Prior peer-reviewed publications
  • Relevant orthopaedic research experience
  • Productive collaborations
  • Institutional support
  • Access to appropriate patient populations and research infrastructure

For early-career awards, productivity is assessed relative to career stage.

6. Feasibility and likelihood of successful completion

Feasibility is another formal review criterion.

Successful applications present:

  • Achievable aims
  • Appropriate budget
  • Realistic recruitment plans
  • Available resources
  • Practical timelines
  • Clearly defined milestones

Projects should be appropriately scaled for the requested funding period.

7. Potential for future external funding (major emphasis)

One of POSNA's strongest published priorities is supporting projects that can attract future funding.

Reviewers specifically assess whether the project is likely to:

  • Generate pilot data
  • Lead to NIH or other federal funding
  • Support Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) applications
  • Produce future multicenter studies

For several grants, priority is explicitly given to proposals with a high likelihood of obtaining additional external funding.

8. Collaboration and multicenter research

POSNA strongly encourages collaborative research.

Competitive proposals often involve:

  • Multicenter studies
  • Society-wide projects
  • Clinical registries
  • Interdisciplinary teams
  • National research networks

Directed Research Grants and Registry Grants place particular emphasis on collaborative work and broad applicability.

9. Quality, safety, and measurable outcomes

Several POSNA programs specifically prioritize projects that improve:

  • Patient safety
  • Quality of care
  • Value-based care
  • Clinical outcomes

Applications should include measurable endpoints and demonstrate how success will be evaluated.

10. Early-career investigator development (program-specific)

Programs such as the Research Start-Up Grant and St. Giles Young Investigator Award are designed to help junior investigators establish independent research careers.

Competitive applicants typically demonstrate:

  • Strong mentorship
  • Career-development potential
  • Innovative pilot ideas
  • Commitment to pediatric orthopaedic research

These awards are intended to generate preliminary data that can support larger future grants.

  • All dues paying POSNA members in good standing are eligible for a microgrant.
  • Residents and fellows who are not members of POSNA may apply, as long as a dues paying member in good standing is associated with the project and will be able to see it to completion.
  • Microgrant recipients in the previous cycle (6 months prior to current grant cycle) are not eligible for current grant cycle.

Each investigator is limited to two (2) grant proposal submissions per cycle but only one (1) grant will be awarded.
