Grant Overview
Description
The EPOS Research Grant supports a broad range of research areas, including patient-based studies, clinical and basic science research, and clinical trials.
Focus for 2026 grants: Topics identified as most relevant in the EPOS Delphi Study (Perthes disease, Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis, Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip, fractures around the elbow, forearm and femur).
Evaluation Criteria

Final Scientific Report:
A comprehensive scientific report must be submitted within three months of project completion. If approved by the EPOS Executive Committee, the study will receive EPOS endorsement.
This is the strongest success predictor. Competitive projects should clearly advance knowledge or care in childhood musculoskeletal disorders, including:
EPOS explicitly funds clinical and basic science research in paediatric orthopaedics, so the relevance should be direct rather than peripheral.
This is one of the clearest current predictors. For 2026, EPOS highlights topics identified as especially relevant through its Delphi priority-setting study:
Projects in other paediatric orthopaedic areas remain within the broad scope, but explicit alignment with these identified priorities is likely to strengthen strategic fit.
The strongest proposals address an important unresolved problem and show how the findings could improve:
EPOS's strategic plan specifically links research support with advancement of paediatric orthopaedics and development of evidence-based clinical guidance.
A competitive application should demonstrate:
EPOS's research-support framework emphasizes scientific validity and ethical standards, including in its formal guidance for research initiatives involving its membership.
The current grant is relatively focused in scale. The strongest projects therefore match their aims to the available resources.
Competitive proposals usually demonstrate:
A tightly designed study that can produce a meaningful result is likely to fit better than an expensive project dependent on substantial additional unfunded resources.
EPOS's 2024–2028 strategic plan specifically identifies support for:
This makes collaboration a particularly strong predictor when the scientific question benefits from larger sample sizes, diverse patient populations, or standardized practice across centres.
Strong proposals may involve:
EPOS explicitly aims to develop evidence-based clinical guidelines for common paediatric orthopaedic disorders. Research becomes especially compelling when it can help resolve:
A project that could eventually inform consensus or clinical guidance has strong strategic relevance.
Reviewers need confidence that the team can complete the proposed work.
Competitive applications generally demonstrate:
The scientific breadth of EPOS's recognized work—spanning clinical studies, basic science, and computational research—also suggests that multidisciplinary expertise can strengthen projects when it is essential to the research question.
EPOS operates an international research community through its annual scientific meeting and the Journal of Children's Orthopaedics. Strong projects should have a credible path toward:
Recent EPOS scientific awards recognize high-quality clinical, basic science, and computational work, reinforcing the value of research that produces clear and communicable findings.
EPOS's membership information explicitly lists eligibility to apply for EPOS Research Grants as a membership benefit. Applicants should therefore verify current membership requirements before submission.
