Focus:	Roshen N. Description:	POSNA is able to support this award through a $1.1 million endowment from Roshen N. Irani, MD, 1929-2007. Dr. Irani was born in Iran and was raised in India. She attended the Grant Medical College at the University of Bombay and took residency at DC General at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She was a member of the Pediatric Orthopedic Study Group, one of POSNA’s founding societies, and one of POSNA’s first women pediatric orthopaedists. She practiced in Philadelphia with the St. Christopher’s group, the Thomas Jefferson Medical Center, and in private practice.
How to Apply:	Applicants interested in the Roshen N. Irani Breakout Research Award must submit a Letter of Intent through ProposalCentral under one of the following grant categories: Directed Research, Clinical Trials Planning Grant, POSNA Research Grant, or Registry Grant. At the LOI stage, applicants must also check a box indicating their intent to apply for the award. If invited to submit a full application, applicants must again check the box indicating which award they wish to be considered for, and submit the additional materials required for the award. Full Application Requirements: To be considered for the Roshen N. Irani Breakout Research Award the applicant must submit a CV that outlines all previous funding awarded and/or a statement on the limited research infrastructure at the applicant’s institution, as well as a 1-page personal narrative, in conjunction with their grant proposal. The personal narrative should highlight: Career goals Vision for the future- How will this grant seed future research? How does this project help you as an investigator overcome traditional barriers to research?
Scoring Criteria:	Applications will be evaluated through a two-stage review process. Stage 1: Grant Proposal Review All grant applications will be evaluated according to the scoring criteria outlined for the specific grant mechanism. Applications must receive a highly competitive score during this review to be eligible for consideration for the Roshen N. Irani Breakout Research Award. Excellence in the proposed research is the primary determinant of eligibility for this additional funding opportunity. Stage 2: Roshen N. Irani Breakout Research Award Review Only applicants with the highest-scoring grant proposals will advance to Roshen N. Irani Breakout Research Award review. Applicants advancing from Stage 1 will undergo an additional review of their CV and personal narrative. These materials should highlight: Career goals Vision for the future- How will this grant seed future research? How does this project help you as an investigator overcome traditional barriers to research? The CV and personal narrative will be used to distinguish among the most competitive grant applicants and identify the Roshen N. Irani Breakout Research Award recipient. While a highly competitive grant score is required to advance to Stage 2, the supplemental materials will play a critical role in determining the final award recipient.

Eligibility Requirements

The Roshen N. Irani Breakout Research Award is available to investigators who have not received grant funding in the amount of $10,000 or more, or are from an institution with limited research infrastructure.
Active, Associate, Candidate Active, and Candidate Associate POSNA members in good standing may apply.
Non-orthopaedic surgeon MDs, PhDs, or DVMs are eligible to apply if affiliated with an orthopaedic department and working with an orthopaedic surgeon/POSNA member who is the Co-PI.
Current grant or award recipients, apart from current microgrant recipients, cannot apply for a future grant as a PI, as one of multiple investigators, or as a co-investigator until the current award/grant research is completed and all final reports and expense reports have been submitted and accepted. An exception can be made if a co-investigator is due less than $5,000 for the remaining timeline of the grant, inclusive of any payment made during the current calendar year.
