Pilot Research Grant

Eye Bank Association of America

Each year, the EBAA awards the Pilot Research Grants to fund proposals specifically concerned with issues directly related to eye banking and/or corneal transplantation. Preference is given to pilot projects, well-defined short-term protocols, and initial studies directed toward new research initiatives.

Multiple grants of $7,500 each will be awarded. The recipients are selected during the Annual Meeting in June and the grants are awarded in July.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

From a reviewer’s perspective, strong EBAA applications consistently demonstrate:

1. Direct Relevance to Eye Banking

This is critical.

High-scoring projects:

Clearly address real-world eye bank challenges

Improve donor tissue quality, safety, efficiency, or transplant outcomes

Align with EBAA Medical Standards and Procedures

Purely theoretical or unrelated basic science is rarely competitive.

2. Practical Impact & Implementability

Reviewers favour projects that can:

Be adopted by multiple eye banks

Inform best-practice guidelines

Improve consistency, safety, or cost-effectiveness

Clear pathways to implementation strengthen proposals.

3. Feasible, Well-Scoped Design

Because funding is modest:

Projects must be achievable within ~12 months

Clear milestones and deliverables are expected

Pilot or proof-of-concept studies score well

4. Strong Eye-Bank Collaboration

Competitive applications often include:

Active involvement of accredited eye banks

Access to donor tissue, data, or operational workflows

Multidisciplinary collaboration (ophthalmology + eye bank operations)

5. Investigator & Institutional Capability

Reviewers assess:

Experience with ocular tissue or transplantation research

Access to appropriate facilities and regulatory approvals

Ability to complete the work and disseminate findings

🛠 Practical Application Tips

✔ Explicitly link aims to eye bank practice improvement
✔ Reference EBAA standards or unmet needs where relevant
✔ Keep aims focused and realistic
✔ Demonstrate how results could be scaled or adopted
✔ Include a clear dissemination plan (EBAA meeting, Eye Bank Journal, peer-reviewed journals)
