Australian Vision Research (AVR) provides seed grants to support innovative and clinically relevant research that advances eye health and vision science.
Grants are open to Ophthalmologists and trainee Ophthalmologists for research conducted in ophthalmic research institutes or equivalent ophthalmic led university departments focused on vision research.
Applications that have already secured funding elsewhere are not eligible. AVR reserves the right to request copies of previous grant applications submitted to other bodies to determine funding eligibility.
At least one investigator in the team must be:
For overseas co-investigators:
Grant size:
AVR will consider funding individual grants of up to $70,000 for one year.
Although AVR does not publish formal predictors, its criteria and priorities clearly indicate what leads to success:
Projects must address:
eye disease
prevention of blindness
improvement in patient outcomes
👉 Strongest predictor:
Clear impact on vision health or clinical practice
Preference for research that:
moves from lab → clinic
improves diagnosis or treatment
👉 AVR prioritizes real-world application
Strong:
study design
hypothesis
methodology
👉 Peer review ensures high scientific standards
Projects must be:
achievable within $65K budget
realistic within timeframe
👉 Overly complex proposals are less competitive
Applicants are typically:
ophthalmologists
vision scientists
clinical researchers
👉 Track record and institutional support matter
Higher success for work targeting:
macular degeneration
glaucoma
retinal disease
surgical innovation
Projects that:
improve treatment
enhance early detection
reduce blindness risk
👉 Strong predictor: clear benefit to patients
Projects linked to:
hospitals
universities
clinical networks
are more competitive
Novel:
diagnostic tools
therapies
surgical techniques
increase competitiveness
Like many foundations, AVR favors projects that can:
lead to larger grants (e.g., NHMRC)
scale into major clinical trials
AVR does not publish:
numerical scoring systems
funding probability models
cut-off thresholds
👉 AVR is a mid-scale, clinically focused funder (between small foundations and national agencies).
Practical “Success Formula”
Strong AVR grant =
Clinical relevance + translational impact + scientific rigor + feasibility + patient benefit
Australian Vision Research (AVR) is a nonprofit funder of ophthalmic research aimed at preventing blindness and improving eye health.
It provides competitive grants (~$65K) across all major eye diseases.
While it does not publish formal success predictors, funding success is strongly driven by:
clinical and translational impact
scientific quality
feasibility within budget
alignment with major eye health challenges
potential to improve patient outcomes
General Grant Eligibility
If a project funded by AVR subsequently receives funding from another source for the same or a substantially similar project, AVR may request a copy of the other successful application to assess potential overlap. Based on this assessment, the Committee may reduce or withdraw AVR funding to avoid duplication of support.
Successful applicants must promptly notify AVR of any additional funding obtained or expected for the same or a related project. Decisions of the Research Advisory Committee in these matters are final.
Priming Grant Eligibility
The AVR Priming Grant supports early-stage clinician-researchers.
Eligibility Requirements:
Pre-submission discussions with the AVR Research Advisory Committee are encouraged (non-binding). Contact grants@australianvisionresearch.org at least 21 days prior to submission.
Sponsored Grant Eligibility
ANZSRS Sponsored Grant
The Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists (ANZSRS) has commitment to provide $60,000 to support research, with a preference for awarding the grant to projects where a full ANZSRS member is listed as part of the investigative team. This prioritisation reflects ANZSRS’s dedication to supporting the professional development and research impact of its members.
