The American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHFoundation) invites investigators to submit proposals in competition for up to four research grants of $25,000 each. The New Century Scholars Research Grant is designed to advance knowledge, tools, and techniques in communication sciences and disorders.
While proposal type and content area are not restricted, this grant supports studies that are innovative, have a promise of major impact, or can meet research needs not yet addressed. The funding can be applied to a one- or two-year study.
Note for 2026: In preparation for the grant submission and review processes, the ASHFoundation requests that potential investigators complete an Intent to Submit Form by March 4. This step must be completed before proceeding to the proposal submission process.
Who Should Apply
New Funding Opportunity for Augmentative and Alternative Communication Studies
In recognition of Dr. Joan Bruno’s accomplished career as a speech-language pathologist and visionary leader in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), one additional New Century Scholars Research Grant will be awarded through the newly endowed Dr. Joan Bruno Augmentative and Alternative Communication Research Fund. Proposals must first meet the competition funding criteria, and among those that qualify, one proposal focused on AAC research will be supported by this fund.
Funding Opportunity for Dysphagia Studies
Of the proposals that meet funding criteria and will be funded in this competition, an endowed Swallowing Research Fund is available to support proposals for research topics in swallowing and swallowing disorders. The Swallowing Research Fund was established in 2009 by ASHA Special Interest Group 13 (then Division 13).
Projects must address real clinical problems in speech, language, or hearing
Purely theoretical or technical work (e.g., AI without clinical impact) is not eligible
👉 Strong predictor: Clear pathway to improving patient care or outcomes
Novel research questions or approaches
Especially valued:
emerging technologies (AI, digital health)
under-studied populations
👉 Innovation + feasibility is critical
Many grants require multi-disciplinary teams
(e.g., clinician + AI expert + researcher)
👉 Strong predictor: Collaborative, cross-field proposals
Many programs target:
early-career researchers
new investigators
👉 Success depends on:
career trajectory
mentorship
research independence potential
Projects must be:
achievable within 1–2 years
realistic given funding level (~$10K–$75K typical range)
Higher success when proposals align with:
communication disorders impact
health equity
pediatric or neurodevelopmental conditions
technology-enabled care
Although early-career focus exists, reviewers still consider:
publications
institutional support
likelihood of dissemination
👉 Strong proposals include:
publication plan
conference dissemination
Because:
>90 % of awardees later secure external funding
👉 Reviewers implicitly prioritize:
projects likely to scale into NIH/major grants
❌ No published:
numerical scoring rubric
probability thresholds
“success predictor model”
The ASHFoundation uses peer review without a formal predictive model, but success strongly depends on:
🔑 Real Predictors of Funding Success
Clinical relevance to communication disorders
Innovation + translational impact
Interdisciplinary collaboration
Early-career potential (for many awards)
Feasible design and clear outcomes
Alignment with priority areas
Potential for future large-scale funding
👉 Think of ASHFoundation funding as:
“Early-stage, high-impact seed funding for clinically meaningful ideas with strong future potential.”
