Non-Diabetic Endocrinology Collaborative Grants 2026

Novo Nordisk Fonden

The purpose of the grants is to facilitate synergy between the research partners, positioning Denmark and the Nordics at an international level in improving prevention and care for patients with non-diabetic endocrine disorders. The objective is to advance the field of non-diabetic endocrinology in Denmark and the Nordic counties and enhance patient outcomes for those affected by related endocrine conditions.

Areas of Support

The research projects must be clinical and collaborative and focus on endocrine disorders within e.g. thyroid, calcium metabolism, pituitary/adrenal/neuroendocrine, reproduction and women’s diseases. Projects within diabetes research are not eligible.

The Main Applicant

  • The main applicant must be anchored at a Danish or Nordic university hospital.
  • The main applicant must be at a minimum at the Assistant Professor level or have an equivalent clinical research position. Please note that postdocs are not able to apply as main applicants to this call but can be part of a project team.

Co-Applicants

  • There must be a minimum of one co-applicant from a different university hospital to the main applicant.
  • It is critical that there is an anchor in Denmark. If the main applicant is from a Nordic university hospital, there must be a minimum of one co-applicant from a Danish university hospital.
  • There can be up to three additional co-applicants from hospitals, universities or non-profit research institutions in Denmark, the Nordics or abroad.

Funding

A total of up to DKK 53 million is available for grants between DKK 5 million and DKK 10 million for projects lasting from 3 to 5 years.

Application Process

The application process is a one-stage process.

It is important, that the applicant carefully reads the “Information and Guidelines for Applicants – Non-Diabetic Endocrinology Collaborative Grants”, accessed via “Application guidelines”, before initiating the application process, as this document contains the complete call as well as detailed instructions for the application process.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Exceptional scientific excellence

This is the clearest predictor across almost all NNF calls.

The strongest applications consistently demonstrate:

  • outstanding scientific quality
  • a compelling research question
  • robust hypothesis-driven design
  • excellent publication record
  • strong investigator independence

NNF states that applications are assessed through international expert peer review with strong emphasis on scientific quality.

2. Novelty and innovation

Highly competitive proposals usually present:

  • bold new scientific concepts
  • disruptive or frontier approaches
  • original methodologies
  • transformative biological or medical insight
  • potential to shift the field substantially

Several NNF calls explicitly mention quality and novelty among assessment criteria.

3. Strong alignment with NNF strategic priorities

Projects perform best when clearly aligned with one of NNF’s major focus areas, especially:

  • cardiometabolic disease
  • diabetes and obesity
  • regenerative medicine
  • infectious diseases and vaccines
  • biotechnology
  • life sciences
  • sustainability and biosolutions
  • reducing inequity in health

NNF’s 2030 strategy highlights these as core funding themes.

4. Clear societal or health impact

NNF strongly values projects with the potential to:

  • improve human health
  • reduce disease burden
  • advance prevention or treatment
  • enable healthcare innovation
  • create measurable societal benefit
  • strengthen sustainability solutions

Impact beyond academia is a major advantage.

5. Feasible and well-executed project plan

Successful applications typically include:

  • realistic timelines
  • clear milestones
  • achievable deliverables
  • strong project management
  • appropriate budget justification
  • clear institutional support

NNF application guidance specifically encourages careful planning and coordination with host institutions before submission.

6. Strong research environment and collaboration

Competitive proposals often benefit from:

  • excellent host institution
  • international collaborations
  • multidisciplinary teams
  • access to advanced infrastructure
  • strong mentoring or institutional support

Environment and collaboration are explicitly mentioned in multiple NNF assessment frameworks.

7. Strong applicant track record

For investigator-led awards, reviewers heavily assess:

  • publication quality
  • citation impact
  • previous funding success
  • leadership of independent research programmes
  • ability to deliver major projects

For example, the Laureate Research Grant requires applicants to have led an independent research programme for 7+ years.

8. Potential for long-term platform building

NNF often funds projects that can:

  • build long-term research programmes
  • create new research platforms or infrastructure
  • generate future large-scale collaborations
  • position teams for future international funding

Projects with durable scientific value tend to be especially attractive.

9. Strong translational or interdisciplinary potential

High-scoring applications frequently combine:

  • biology
  • medicine
  • engineering
  • computational biology
  • AI/data science
  • biotechnology
  • translational research

Cross-disciplinary approaches are increasingly prominent across NNF programmes.

10. Clear and persuasive grant writing

NNF’s own guidance encourages applicants to:

  • read call instructions carefully
  • complete every field accurately
  • structure the proposal clearly
  • ensure strong formatting and language
  • seek colleague/mentor review before submission

Clarity and presentation can strongly influence reviewer perception.

Common Reasons for Rejection

Frequent reviewer concerns include:

  • weak alignment with NNF priority themes
  • insufficient novelty
  • limited scientific impact
  • unclear execution plan
  • poor feasibility
  • weak institutional support
  • incremental rather than transformative science
  • unclear pathway to broader benefit

The research project must address a challenge within the area of clinical non-diabetic endocrinology. This could be accomplished by establishing national cohorts and/or infrastructure or by other means.
