Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group

The next advance in gynaecological cancer treatment and care can begin with a research question that has not yet been answered.

ANZGOG’s Fund for New Research Grant Program supports promising research at an important early stage of development, helping researchers generate the evidence and insights needed to progress towards larger research projects and, where appropriate, future clinical trials.

The Fund supports investigator-led research across gynaecological cancers, providing an opportunity to test new ideas, undertake pilot or feasibility work and develop the evidence needed to take promising research to its next stage.

Early Career Researchers are particularly encouraged to apply.

2026 Fund for New Research
With significant support from ANZGOG donors, the 2026 Fund will provide four research grants:

Endometrial cancer focused surgical study (1 grant only, up to $55,000)
Leiomyosarcoma focused project (1 grant only, up to $65,000)
Endometrial cancer focused project (1 grant only, up to $100,000)
Clinical or pre-clinical ovarian carcinosarcoma project (1 grant only, up to $50,000)

Priority will be given to projects which complete the form correctly and describe how the project will lead to a larger study or clinical trial. The 2026 Fund for New Research applications must align with the current ANZGOG strategic plan (2023 – 2028).

Clinical projects may include:

Pilot or feasibility studies (if intended to generate data to support preparation for a larger research project).
Sub-studies of clinical studies already underway, such as clinical studies, QOL etc.
Projects that have commenced recruitment are not eligible.
Projects proposing a clinical trial in Australia and/or New Zealand led by international counterparts are not eligible.

Translational projects may include:

New translational sub-studies of current or prior trials.

Pre-clinical projects may include:

Drug therapies.
Research that will contribute to clinical trial design or refinement.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Direct gynaecological-cancer relevance ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the fundamental eligibility/fit criterion.

ANZGOG's research covers gynaecological cancers including:

Ovarian cancer
Endometrial/uterine cancer
Cervical cancer
Vulval cancer
Vaginal cancer
Rare and less-common gynaecological cancers

Its overall research purpose is to address the causes, prevention and treatments of gynaecological cancers.

A general women's-health project without a clear gynaecological-cancer component would therefore have weak fit.

2. Clear pathway to a larger study or clinical trial ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is probably the most distinctive predictor of success for the Fund for New Research.

ANZGOG says the program is designed to help investigators move from an initial research idea to a larger research project, with priority given to proposals showing a clear pathway toward a larger study or clinical trial.

The proposal should therefore explicitly answer:

If this project succeeds, what is the next study?

For example:

Pilot study → preliminary evidence → multicentre study → clinical trial

or:

Preclinical result → treatment rationale → trial design → clinical trial

This is considerably stronger than presenting the project as a stand-alone experiment.

3. Important unmet clinical need ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ANZGOG emphasizes clinically important research with potential to improve the future of gynaecological cancer care.

Strong applications should identify a specific gap such as:

Limited treatment options
Treatment resistance
Poor survival
Late diagnosis
Surgical uncertainty
Lack of evidence for a particular intervention
Poor quality of life
Survivorship problems
Rare cancer with insufficient evidence
Lack of precision-treatment options

The application should make the unmet need immediately understandable.

4. Patient outcomes and quality of life ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ANZGOG's mission explicitly emphasizes outcomes and quality of life.

Consequently, projects are strengthened when they have a clear potential pathway to:

Longer survival
Better treatment response
Reduced toxicity
Better surgical outcomes
Reduced recurrence
Improved quality of life
Better symptom management
Improved survivorship
More equitable access to effective treatment

A proposal should connect its scientific endpoint to a meaningful patient outcome.

5. Clinical or translational relevance ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ANZGOG accepts clinical, translational, pre-clinical and survivorship research, but preclinical/translational concepts are considered partly on their potential clinical application and likelihood of contributing to a future clinical trial.

Laboratory discovery → biomarker/target → patient validation → trial design

Strong clinical pathway

Clinical problem → pilot/feasibility study → evidence → multicentre trial

Strong survivorship pathway

Patient-reported problem → intervention → feasibility/efficacy evidence → larger study

6. Innovation ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ANZGOG's Fund for New Research is intended to support promising ideas and new research at an early development stage.

Examples of potentially competitive concepts include:

Precision oncology
Molecularly targeted treatment
Novel therapeutic combinations
Biomarker-guided treatment
New surgical approaches
AI-assisted diagnosis or treatment planning
Novel survivorship interventions
Quality-of-life interventions
Rare gynaecological cancers

Innovation should, however, be connected to a clearly defined clinical problem.

7. Strong methodology ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A competitive application should demonstrate that the proposed pilot will generate credible evidence for the next stage.

Important elements include:

Clear hypothesis/research question
Appropriate patient or experimental population
Appropriate controls
Validated outcome measures
Appropriate statistical approach
Recruitment feasibility
Ethical considerations
Clearly defined endpoints
Appropriate sample size
Defined next-step decision criteria

The methodology should be proportionate to the grant.

8. Feasibility ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ANZGOG specifically requires projects to be feasible and achievable within the proposed budget and timeframe. Projects must also be fully funded through the ANZGOG award or a combination of secured funding.

Therefore, explain:

Why the required patients/samples are accessible
Why recruitment is realistic
Why the technology is already available
Who will conduct the analysis
What infrastructure is available
How the project will be completed on schedule
What will happen if recruitment or experimentation is slower than expected

For a pilot grant, a focused and achievable project is preferable to an enormous research program.

9. Multidisciplinary collaboration ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

ANZGOG is explicitly a multidisciplinary research organisation. Its membership includes clinicians, nurses, data managers, social workers, exercise physiologists, allied health professionals and laboratory researchers.
