The Department of Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center offers one-year Breast Pathology Fellowship positions. All fellows should have completed residency training in anatomic pathology and be certified (or eligible for certification) by the American Board of Pathology.
The fellowship focuses on the characterization of mammary neoplasms and non-neoplastic diseases and emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to patient management. Clinicopathologic and translational research is also an integral part of the training. The breast pathology fellows work closely with a cadre of breast pathology experts. The case material at MSK is especially complex and challenging and consists of both in-house specimens and submitted consultations. The breast pathology fellows actively participate in all clinical activities and present cases at the weekly multidisciplinary conference. The fellows are based at the state-of-the-art Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center, and benefit from close interaction with a team of outstanding clinicians who specialize in the treatment of breast cancer patients. Selective rotations in the departments of surgery, radiology and radiation oncology enhance the understanding of the clinical aspects of breast diseases, and their implications for the practicing pathologist.
How to Apply
Once applicants have submitted their applications, they will need to send the following documents in order to be considered for a fellowship position:
Additional Information
Goals and Objectives
Responsibilities
The breast pathology fellows will review slides and prepare reports for selected in-house and submitted consultation cases, with increasing autonomy as the fellowship progresses. Responsibilities also include supervision of trainees, pathologist assistants and rotating visitors and participation in intradepartmental teaching conferences and journal club presentations. The fellows will present cases at the weekly multidisciplinary breast conference, and attend the intradepartmental breast pathology consensus conference and research meetings. The fellows will also participate in activities such as tissue procurement and review of archival pathology cases.
The breast pathology fellows will engage in both independent and collaborative research, select a limited number of primary research projects and pursue them under the guidance of the attending faculty. The fellows will prepare research proposals, participate in and coordinate the completion of projects, compile and analyze the data from these studies, prepare abstracts for submission to scientific meetings, and compile manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.
The strongest predictor is clear alignment with MSK’s core mission in cancer research, treatment, and education. Competitive projects generally focus on areas such as:
Projects with a clear connection to understanding, preventing, diagnosing, or treating cancer are the strongest fit.
MSK’s research environment is highly competitive. Strong proposals typically demonstrate:
Institutional developmental funding has been used to support emerging research areas and projects capable of strengthening broader cancer research programs.
Innovative science is a major feature of MSK’s internal and donor-supported research ecosystem. Strong applications often involve:
For example, MSK-associated discovery funding has supported compelling projects beyond an investigator’s existing funded research and collaborative high-risk/high-reward “grand challenge” projects.
MSK places exceptional emphasis on moving scientific discoveries toward patient benefit.
Competitive projects often demonstrate a path toward:
MSK’s K12 clinical oncology program explicitly focuses on training the next generation of translational cancer physicians, while its research programs integrate laboratory and clinical investigation.
Competitive research applications generally require enough evidence to show that the proposed work is achievable.
Strong proposals usually include:
For pilot and developmental projects, preliminary data are especially valuable when they demonstrate that a novel idea can grow into a larger externally funded research program.
Investigator quality is particularly important across MSK fellowships, career-development awards, and internal research programs.
Competitive applicants generally demonstrate:
Some MSK-supported training mechanisms explicitly target researchers who show exceptional potential to make significant contributions to their fields.
For students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career investigators, mentorship is a major success factor.
The strongest applications typically provide access to:
MSK maintains more than 200 research laboratories and provides institutional support for researchers seeking fellowships and external grants.
Complex cancer problems often require collaboration among:
MSK’s institutional funding history specifically includes support for cross-disciplinary pilot projects, while donor-supported programs have funded collaborative high-risk/high-reward research involving multiple laboratories.
A strategically strong MSK pilot project should create a pathway toward:
MSK’s Grants and Contracts infrastructure specifically assists researchers with proposal development, funding identification, and competitive external grant submission.
For fellowships and training awards, the strongest candidate is not simply the person with the best project. Reviewers are also likely to value:
MSK’s fellowship and training programs are explicitly designed to prepare researchers and physicians for leadership roles in cancer research and care.
