Education and Scientific Bursary

European Federation for Immunogenetics

To promote training in the field of Immunogenetics and Histocompatibility, the EFI Executive Committee has allocated a fixed number of bursaries to EFI members wishing to visit another laboratory to learn new techniques and to develop research collaborations. The duration of the stay should be between 1 and 4 weeks approximately. The bursary of up to a maximum amount of €1500 will cover travel and lodging

Reimbursement The bursary will normally be awarded after the visit has taken place and the applicant should submit receipts for travel, accommodation and subsistence up to the award limit to the EFI treasurer together. Information on the bank account (indicate the address of the bank, the title of the account, the BIC (bank number) and IBAN (account number) should also be sent to the treasurer. A confirmation of receipt of funds must be sent to the treasurer for accountability. In exceptional circumstances, the bursary will be awarded prior to the visit taking place. A written request must be sent to the EFI secretary.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

✅ 1) Strong Scientific Focus in Immunogenetics or Related Fields

Applications should align tightly with immunogenetics, histocompatibility, transplantation biology, HLA genetics, and related areas. This thematic fit is essential because EFI’s mission is specific to this discipline rather than general immunology. Wikipedia

Predictor:
✔ Clearly articulate how your project advances immunogenetics knowledge or skills.

✅ 2) Eligibility and Membership in a National or Affiliate Society

Many EFI-linked opportunities require membership in a society affiliated with EFI for a minimum period (usually ≥ 1 year).
For the IL short-term fellowship, applicants must show proof of this membership. EFIS

Predictor:
✔ Ensure active affiliation with an EFI-member society before applying.

✅ 3) Clear, Feasible Training or Project Plan (for Fellowships)

For short-term fellowships, the proposal should outline:

Aim and scientific background

Objectives and methodology

A plausible work plan for the 1–3 month stay

Expected outcomes and how the mobility enhances your research skills or collaborations. EFIS

Predictor:
✔ Detailed, time-scaled plan with milestones increases competitiveness.

✅ 4) Host Laboratory Support for Mobility Awards

Short-term fellowship applications require a letter of acceptance/support from the host institution (a European lab different from the current workplace). EFIS

Predictor:
✔ Secure a committed host and include strong endorsement letters.

✅ 5) Clear Career Stage Targeting

The IL fellowships are targeted at early-career researchers (MD/PhD up to ~3 years postdoc). EFIS

Predictor:
✔ Demonstrate your career need — e.g., how the fellowship jump-starts independence or adds key skills.

✅ 6) For Travel Grants: Scientific Participation

When travel grants are offered (e.g., tied to EFIS/IUIS meetings), reviewers often look for:

Submitted abstract to the conference

Proof of conference registration

Career stage justification (e.g., student/postdoc)

Value of attendance to your research. IUIS

Predictor:
✔ Presenting work (poster/oral) at relevant international meetings boosts your travel grant competitiveness.

✅ 7) High-Quality Scientific Outputs or Recognition

For awards and prizes, documented impact and scientific excellence (e.g., publications, citations, and leadership in the field) matter. EFI prizes include awards like the Julia Bodmer Award and Best Abstract/Poster Awards given at conferences. efi-web.org

Predictor:
✔ Demonstrate strong scientific contributions through abstracts, published work, or documented advances in immunogenetics.

🧠 Practical Application Tips

📌 Short-Term IL Fellowship:

Prepare a concise project summary (~2 pages) stating aims, significance, and methods.

Get a signed acceptance letter from a European host lab/institution.

Include a CV and publication list to show potential for benefit from mobility.

Confirm & document your membership in a national immunology/immunogenetics society. EFIS

📌 Travel Grants (when available):

Ensure your conference abstract is scientifically strong and clearly presented.

Provide proof of membership and meeting registration.

Emphasise the value of attending to your career development. IUIS

📌 Awards & Prizes:

For best abstract/poster awards, highlight scientific novelty, clarity, and relevance.

For named awards (e.g., Julia Bodmer), showcase high-impact work or contributions to immunogenetics. efi-web.org
