CSL is committed to saving lives and improving the quality of life for people with rare and serious diseases worldwide. This commitment is reflected in the support for Investigator-Initiated Studies (IIS) that advance medical and scientific knowledge of CSL products and the diseases they have been designed to treat. CSL also supports innovative clinical and basic science studies that address important medical and scientific questions related to our therapeutic Areas of Interest. Applicant proposals may request funding only, or funding and drug supply.
Investigator‑Initiated Studies supported by CSL are conducted independently by the investigator or sponsoring institution. Investigators are responsible for study design, execution, and reporting, as well as obtaining all required ethical and regulatory approvals.
Investigators are expected to conduct studies in accordance with applicable laws and ethical standards, provide timely study updates and final results, appropriately acknowledge CSL support, and use any funding or product supplied solely for the approved research. Investigators are encouraged to disseminate study findings in a transparent and responsible manner, regardless of outcome.
Immunoglobulins
Hematology
Hereditary Angioedema (HAE)
IgA Nephropathy
The CSL IIS program is open to physicians, researchers and institutions interested in conducting their own research. We receive many requests for support and carefully evaluate each one with priority given to proposals that align with our research interests.

The following ranking is a practical synthesis of CSL's published funding priorities and application requirements, not an official universal scoring rubric.
★★★★★
Strong alignment with CSL's therapeutic priorities
The project must address an area covered by the specific funding call, such as immunoglobulin therapy, hemophilia, hereditary angioedema, IgA nephropathy, acquired bleeding disorders or influenza vaccines.
CSL
+1
★★★★★
Clear unmet medical need and patient benefit
Identify a meaningful clinical problem, such as delayed diagnosis, inadequate disease control, treatment burden or poor outcomes, and explain how the proposed work could address it.
★★★★★
Scientific quality and innovation
Use a well-supported rationale and a clear research question. For IIS proposals, CSL evaluates medical and scientific value alongside its current research priorities and available resources.
CSL
★★★★★
Methodological rigor and a complete protocol
For investigator-initiated studies, submit a developed study synopsis or draft protocol, appropriate endpoints, a defensible analysis plan, a detailed budget and the required investigator documentation. High-level concepts alone may be insufficient.
CSL
+1
★★★★☆
Feasibility and access to resources
Demonstrate access to suitable patients, data, clinical sites, products or laboratory infrastructure, with realistic milestones and appropriate ethical and regulatory approvals.
★★★★☆
Relevant investigator expertise
Show that the principal investigator and collaborators have the skills needed to execute the work and report results responsibly. For fellowship awards, the applicant's research potential and career development are especially relevant.
★★★★☆
Clinically meaningful outcomes
Measure outcomes relevant to patients and clinical practice, including disease control, safety, quality of life, diagnostic accuracy, healthcare utilization or treatment effectiveness.
★★★★☆
Independence and transparency
For medical education and patient-organization grants, demonstrate that content, speakers, methods and activities remain independent of CSL's commercial influence. For IIS, the investigator or institution retains responsibility for study design, conduct and reporting.
CSL
+1
★★★☆☆
Dissemination and sustainable impact
Explain how results will be reported, shared with clinicians or patients, and used to improve future research or clinical practice. Educational programs should specify their intended audience and measurable learning or patient outcomes.
★★★★☆
Eligibility, budget and application compliance
Use the correct regional portal, follow the submission cycle, provide the required documents and justify requested costs. Note that standard CSL grants and patient-organization grants are generally awarded to eligible organizations, not individuals.
