AI Based Application Success Predictor

🧬 1. Strong Focus on Bone Marrow Failure Disorders (Top Predictor)

AAMDSIF funding is strictly targeted to:

  • Aplastic anemia (AA)
  • Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
  • Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH)
  • Related bone marrow failure conditions

👉 Proposals outside these disease areas have very low success rates

🔬 2. High Scientific Merit (Primary Selection Criterion)

  • Grants are awarded to projects with:
    • Highest scientific quality
    • Strong hypothesis and rigorous design
  • Reviewed by a Medical Advisory Board

👉 Scientific merit is the most decisive factor in funding decisions

🔄 3. Translational & Therapeutic Relevance (Critical)

AAMDSIF supports:

  • Basic → translational → clinical continuum
  • Strong preference for:
    • New therapeutic approaches
    • Drug development
    • Early-stage clinical research

👉 Projects must show how they advance treatment or patient outcomes

🧪 4. Mechanistic Understanding of Disease Biology

Successful proposals often:

  • Investigate:
    • Genetic mutations
    • Bone marrow failure mechanisms
  • Aim to improve:
    • Disease classification
    • Personalized therapies

👉 Mechanistic insight is key to improving therapies

👶 5. Emphasis on Genetic & Pediatric Research (Emerging Priority)

  • Dedicated funding areas include:
    • Pediatric bone marrow failure
    • Genetic determinants of disease
  • Focus on:
    • Personalized medicine approaches

👉 Projects linking genetics → therapy have higher success

🎯 6. Clear Clinical Impact Pathway

  • Proposals should demonstrate:
    • Potential to improve:
      • Diagnosis
      • Treatment
      • Survival

👉 Even basic research must show clinical relevance

⚖️ 7. Feasible, Focused Project Scope

  • Typical funding:
    • ~$60,000 over 2 years
  • Projects must be:
    • Realistic
    • Achievable within limited funding

👉 Overly large or complex proposals are often rejected

👩‍🔬 8. Investigator Capability & Relevance

  • Experience in:
    • Hematology
    • Bone marrow failure research
  • Ability to execute:
    • Preclinical or clinical studies

👉 Track record matters, especially in niche diseases

🤝 9. Collaborative & Multidisciplinary Approach

  • Collaboration between:
    • Clinicians
    • Basic scientists
    • Genetic researchers

👉 Multidisciplinary projects improve translational success

📊 10. Potential to Advance the Field

AAMDSIF prioritizes projects that:

  • Generate:
    • New knowledge
    • Future funding opportunities
  • Contribute to:
    • Long-term cures or improved therapies

👉 Grants are often seed funding for larger studies

📊 Summary: Key Predictors (Ranked)

Highest impact factors:

  1. Strong disease-specific focus (AA/MDS/PNH)
  2. Scientific merit
  3. Translational/therapeutic relevance

Moderate predictors:
4. Mechanistic insight (genetics, biology)
5. Clinical impact pathway
6. Feasibility

Supporting factors:
7. Investigator expertise
8. Collaboration
9. Future research potential

💡 Insider Insight

Compared to larger hematology funders:

  • Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation is:
    👉 niche-disease focused + seed-funding oriented

👉 Key evaluation question:
“Will this research meaningfully advance understanding or treatment of bone marrow failure disorders?”

  • Strong disease focus ✔️
  • Mechanistic + translational link ✔️
  • Feasible pilot-scale project ✔️
    Highest success probability

The AAMDSIF Research Grant Program is open to New Investigators only.  New Investigators are post-doctoral fellows, instructors, and those who have been assistant professors for fewer than five (5) years.
