The Skin Cancer Foundation has funded more than $2 million in research grants since the program began in 1981. Many early career investigators in the dermatology community have used their grants to launch studies on the prevention, detection or treatment of skin cancer that ultimately led to significant advances for patients and physicians. These grants are an important first step to getting new ideas off the ground.
Each year, researchers are invited to submit applications for one-year projects to be conducted in or in conjunction with the dermatology departments of medical or academic institutions in the United States. Our program is open to dermatology residents, fellows and investigators within 10 years of their first academic appointment.
Led by longtime Chair David Polsky, MD, PhD, our Research Grants Committee awards two grants of $50,000 and one grant of $25,000.
This is the most important factor.
The Foundation explicitly funds projects related to:
Projects outside skin cancer generally have limited alignment with the program mission.
The Foundation's mission centers on reducing the burden of skin cancer through prevention, detection, and treatment.
Competitive proposals often demonstrate potential to:
Projects with a clear pathway to patient benefit are especially attractive.
SCF research grants are designed as pilot funding.
Successful applications typically:
Because the grants are generally one-year awards, reviewers favor focused projects capable of producing meaningful early results.
A distinctive feature of the program is its emphasis on developing new investigators.
Eligibility includes:
This makes career-development potential a major success predictor.
Strong applicants usually demonstrate:
Because many applicants are trainees or junior faculty, mentorship is highly important.
Competitive applications often include:
A strong mentor can substantially strengthen both feasibility and career-development components.
Even though SCF supports innovative pilot work, reviewers still expect:
Projects must be achievable within the one-year funding period.
For fellows and junior faculty, reviewers commonly consider:
While extensive publication records are not required, prior productivity increases confidence that the project will be completed successfully.
The Foundation's grants frequently serve as a stepping stone toward:
Projects that can generate strong preliminary data for future applications are particularly competitive.
Projects bridging laboratory discoveries and clinical application often perform well.
Examples include:
Such studies align closely with the Foundation's goal of improving patient outcomes.
Our program is open to dermatology residents, fellows and investigators within 10 years of their first academic appointment.
