Robotic Urology & Oncology

Northampton General Hospital

Dr Carlo Andrea Bravi is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with a specialist focus on robotic surgery for prostate and kidney conditions. With international training and extensive experience, he is committed to delivering precise, minimally invasive treatment for patients with urological diseases.

After qualifying in Medicine and Surgery in Italy, Dr Bravi completed his specialist training in Urology at San Raffaele University Hospital in Milan, followed by advanced fellowships at internationally recognised centres, including the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, ORSI Academy in Belgium and the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. He is now based in London and works across leading private and NHS hospitals.

Dr Bravi has performed hundreds of robotic procedures and is especially known for his expertise in robotic surgery, especially in radical prostatectomy (for prostate cancer) and robotic nephrectomy (for kidney masses). He is actively involved in clinical research and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals on surgical outcomes and cancer care.

Main Areas of Interest

  • Robotic Urologic Surgery: High-volume expertise in robotic surgery, including pelvic (radical prostatectomy) and upper urinary tract (nephrectomies and nephroureterectomies, and pyeloplasties) operations. Annual caseload 200-250 robotic procedures.
  • Uro-Oncology & Advanced Genitourinary Tumors: Comprehensive surgical management of prostate, kidney, bladder, testicular, and upper urinary tract cancers. Main focus on prostate cancer management, with joint clinic held with Radiographer where patients will discuss options including surgery, radiotherapy and focal therapy in the same sitting.
  • Robotic Training, Proctorship & Surgical Education: structured robotic training programs, including 6 operating sessions/week.
  • Focal therapy for prostate cancer Expertise in minimally invasive, organ-preserving treatments for localized prostate cancer, including modalities such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and Nanoknife.
  • Research, Innovation & Technology Integration: Active contributor to surgical outcomes research with leadership roles in research and innovation at University Hospitals Northamptonshire.
  • Pelvic Robotic Surgery: robotic radical prostatectomy with nerve-sparing techniques, pelvic lymphadenectomy, and management of localized and locally advanced prostate cancer using state-of-the-art robotic platforms (da Vinci Xi).
  • Upper Urinary Tract Robotic Surgery: Step-by-step exposure to robotic nephrectomies, nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision, and pyeloplasties.
  • Robotic System Proficiency & Simulation-Based Skill Development: Structured training in robotic console use using simulation systems.

Foundations of Robotic Urologic Surgery

  • Introduction to departmental workflow, theatre setup, and robotic system components.
  • Overview of pelvic and upper urinary tract anatomy relevant to robotic surgery.
  • Observation of robotic radical prostatectomy and upper tract surgeries to understand port placement, docking, and console ergonomics.
  • Participation in preoperative MDT meetings, imaging review, and surgical planning.

Pelvic Robotic Surgery – Prostate Cancer

  • Step-by-step exposure to robotic radical prostatectomy with nerve-sparing techniques.
  • Observation of pelvic lymphadenectomy, focusing on anatomy, margins, and oncologic principles.
  • Introduction to intraoperative decision-making: managing challenging dissections, tip and tricks, avoiding complications, and reconstructive steps.
  • Review of operative videos and discussion of learning curves in robotic prostate surgery.

Upper Urinary Tract Robotic Surgery – Kidney & UTUC

  • Observation of robotic nephrectomy and tips-and-tricks discussion on different surgical steps
  • Exposure to robotic nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision for upper urinary tract carcinoma and pyeloplasties, with discussion about surgical steps and techniques
  • Participation in postoperative case follow-up and outcome assessment.
  • Case-based teaching on management of metastatic disease, salvage surgery, and patient selection.

Robotic Skills Development & Simulation Training

  • Hands-on console practice on virtual simulators modules.
  • Training on troubleshooting robotic platforms, docking efficiency, and instrument handling.
  • Mentored participation in ORSI-style structured robotic training curriculum components.

Research, Innovation & Multidisciplinary Integration

  • Participation in uro-oncology tumor boards, journal clubs, and research meetings.
  • Introduction to ongoing projects in AI-enhanced imaging, surgical outcomes research, and robotic device innovation.
  • Engagement in academic activities: abstract preparation, manuscript discussion, or data review.
  • Final assessment, personalized feedback session, and certification of fellowship completion.
