Prof. Karen Spruyt is a senior researcher at the National Institute of Medicine and Health (INSERM) and the University of Paris – Robert Debré Academic Hospital, France. Trained in Clinical Child Psychology, Child Neuropsychology, and Biostatistics, she specializes in the intersection of pediatric sleep and developmental neuropsychology.
Her research focuses on how sleep influences children’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development, with a particular interest in somnopathology and translational applications. Prof. Spruyt actively collaborates with international, multidisciplinary teams and is deeply engaged in mentoring, doctoral supervision, and advancing pediatric sleep education.
· Developmental Neuropsychology & Sleep: Expertise in examining the interplay between children’s sleep and neurodevelopment from infancy through adolescence, with a focus on cognitive, behavioral, and emotional outcomes in both typical and atypical populations.
· Pediatric Sleep Disorders and sleep research methodology: Specialized knowledge in identifying and characterizing pediatric sleep disturbances—including parasomnias, insomnia, circadian rhythm disruptions, and syndromic sleep problems—with emphasis on their neuropsychological and developmental consequences.
· Translational & Multidisciplinary Clinical Research: Application of integrative research methodologies spanning psychology, neuropsychology, and biostatistics to advance pediatric sleep science; leadership in international collaborations, doctoral mentorship, and the promotion of evidence-based approaches to child health and development.
· Polysomnography (PSG): Hands-on exposure to overnight sleep studies, including electrode placement, signal acquisition, scoring, and interpretation of sleep architecture and pathology in pediatric populations.
· Actigraphy & Wearable Technologies: Training in the use of actigraphy, wearable and nearable devices for long-term monitoring of sleep-wake patterns, circadian rhythms, and daily activity in naturalistic settings.
· Survey & Behavioral Assessments: Application of validated questionnaires, parental reports, and behavioral surveys to assess sleep quality, routines, and associated developmental or psychosocial outcomes.
· Neuropsychological & Neuroscientific Assessments: Exposure to cognitive, behavioral, and developmental testing protocols, alongside neuroscientific methods, to investigate the impact of sleep on child neurodevelopment and learning.
