His research focuses on advanced neuroimaging, neurophysiology, and the treatment of pediatric epilepsies, with active roles in international collaborations such as the ENIGMA-Epilepsy project and NETRE rare epilepsy networks. He is Principal Investigator of several national research projects on childhood epilepsy, including studies on noradrenergic dysfunction, Dravet syndrome, and advanced EEG biomarkers.Through his combined expertise in clinical neurology, advanced neuroimaging, and translational epilepsy research, Dr. Bartolini is internationally recognized as a leading figure in the field of pediatric epilepsy.

Main Areas of Interest

  • Pediatric Epilepsy (Comprehensive Scope): Expertise in the diagnosis and management of pediatric epilepsy, with a focus on clinical evaluation, seizure classification, therapeutic strategies, and long-term care of children with epilepsy.
  •  Epilepsy Genetics: Specialized knowledge in the genetic underpinnings of epilepsy, including rare syndromes and molecular diagnostic approaches, with emphasis on precision medicine and individualized treatment plans.
  • Rare Neurological Disorders: Clinical exposure to the assessment and management of rare pediatric neurological conditions, fostering an understanding of complex presentations and multidisciplinary care pathways.
  • Advanced Neuroimaging: Experience in the application of advanced neuroimaging techniques for epilepsy and neurological disorders, including interpretation of MRI and functional imaging for diagnosis, prognosis, and surgical planning.

· Sleep–Wake EEG Recording & Interpretation: Hands-on exposure to performing and analyzing EEG studies across sleep–wake cycles, with emphasis on recognizing epileptiform activity, sleep-related changes, and their clinical relevance in pediatric epilepsy.

·   Long-Term Video EEG Monitoring: Practical training in setting up, conducting, and interpreting prolonged video EEG monitoring, including correlation of electroclinical data, event classification, and its role in presurgical evaluation and management of complex epilepsy cases.

Introduction & Core Pediatric Epilepsy Exposure

  • Orientation to pediatric neurology unit, workflow, and multidisciplinary team structure
  • Observation of inpatient and outpatient pediatric epilepsy clinics
  • Case-based teaching on seizure classification, diagnostic pathways, and treatment strategies
  • Introduction to antiepileptic drug management and long-term care planning for children with epilepsy

Epilepsy Genetics & Rare Neurological Disorders

  • Exposure to the genetic basis of epilepsy, including diagnostic molecular techniques and counseling strategies
  • Case discussions on rare neurological syndromes with epileptic manifestations
  • Participation in multidisciplinary rounds on complex neurological cases
  • Tutorials on the role of precision medicine and individualized treatment approaches

Neurophysiology & Advanced EEG Techniques

  • Sleep–Wake EEG Recording & Interpretation: Hands-on exposure to performing and analyzing sleep–wake cycle EEGs, with focus on identifying epileptiform patterns and sleep-related phenomena
  • Long-Term Video EEG Monitoring: Training in setup, execution, and interpretation of prolonged video EEG monitoring, including electroclinical correlation and seizure event classification

Advanced Neuroimaging & Academic Development

  • Exposure to advanced neuroimaging techniques (MRI, functional imaging) applied to epilepsy and rare neurological disorders
  • Tutorials on imaging interpretation and its integration into epilepsy diagnosis, prognosis, and surgical planning
  • Participation in journal clubs, case review meetings, and academic discussions
