Most participants rated the Minimally Invasive endoscope assisted Neurosurgery Fellowship 5/5. The fellows have highly appreciated the hands-on clinical experience, supportive mentorship, research opportunities, and networking benefits offered by the program.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to complete a fellowship at the Department of Neurosurgery, Greifswald University Hospital. This experience has been both professionally and personally enriching, providing me with invaluable insights that will significantly influence my surgical practice in the future.
The journey to Greifswald was a long one— During this time, Ms. J. Templin, the department secretary, was exceptionally kind and supportive. Despite the delays and challenges in securing my visa, she remained in touch and ensured that all formalities were handled smoothly and efficiently.
From the moment I arrived, I was deeply impressed by the warmth and professionalism of the entire team. Dr. H. Schroeder and Dr. J.U. Müller, despite being highly respected figures in neurosurgery, displayed remarkable humility and approachability. They took the time to explain their procedures in detail and were proactive in sharing their knowledge, rather than simply waiting for me to ask questions. I also had insightful discussions with Dr. J. Müller, Dr. Martin, Dr. Ahmed, and Dr. Hannes, all of whom were incredibly patient and took the time to explain their decision-making processes and surgical techniques.
The department as a whole was extremely welcoming, a testament to their extensive experience in hosting international visitors. Their kindness and efforts in making me feel comfortable helped ease the feeling of being thousands of kilometers away from home. I must also acknowledge the operating theatre staff, who were patient and accommodating, especially given the language barrier.
Professional Experience and Learning
During my time in Greifswald, I had the opportunity to observe a wide range of neurosurgical procedures—some familiar to me and others completely new.
In cranial surgeries, I was particularly impressed by the endoscope-assisted procedures for trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, and pineal region tumors, as well as the fully endoscopic transnasal approaches to the pituitary. While I have prior experience with these procedures, I learned many nuances that make surgeries more efficient and less traumatic for patients. The meticulous arachnoid dissections in posterior fossa surgeries, which help with brain relaxation and dynamic retraction, were particularly impressive. Another important concept I learned was electrophysiological monitoring for hemifacial spasm using lateral spread responses. Additionally, I had the privilege of observing a navigation-guided brainstem cavernoma excision, which was performed with outstanding precision and skill.
In spinal surgeries, I was exposed to a diverse range of cases, from minimally invasive to open procedures. Some of the most valuable experiences included:
• Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), a procedure rarely performed in my home country.
• Percutaneous C2 osteosynthesis for Hangman’s fracture, which was an eye-opening experience.
• Endoscopic spine surgeries, kyphoplasties, and navigation-guided revision spine fixations, which introduced me to advanced techniques for improving accuracy in screw placement.
• A technique for reducing screw length using a drill, which I hadn’t thought possible before witnessing it.
• S2AI screw placement using navigation, which was entirely new to me.
• Anterior cervical discectomy with artificial disc placement, which I observed for the first time. This procedure particularly stood out as it gave me the confidence to perform it myself in the future.
Final Thoughts
This experience was well worth the wait, and my only regret is that my stay in Greifswald was limited to just two weeks. The knowledge and techniques I gained will undoubtedly refine my surgical skills and enhance patient outcomes.
I am incredibly grateful to Trialect for organizing this fellowship, as it would not have been possible without your support. I also extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire team at the Department of Neurosurgery, Greifswald University Hospital, for their generosity, expertise, and hospitality. This experience has been truly transformative, and I look forward to incorporating what I have learned into my practice.
