Advanced Neurosurgical Techniques and Minimal Access Surgery

R. O. M. A. (Roma Operative Microneurosurgery Academy)

Luciano Mastronardi is a distinguished neurosurgeon and professor, currently serving as the Director of the Neurosurgery Unit at San Filippo Neri Hospital in Rome, Italy. He earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery from Sapienza University of Rome in 1985 and completed further specialization in neurosurgery. Throughout his career, Professor Mastronardi has established himself as a leading expert in neurosurgical procedures, including microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia, and has contributed significantly to both clinical practice and academic research. He is recognized for his mentorship and has played an active role in international neurosurgical education and collaboration.

Main Areas of Interest

Skull Base & CPA Tumors: Specialized management of skull base lesions, including acoustic neuromas, petroclival tumors, and complex meningiomas, using advanced microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques.

Cranial Microsurgery & Neurovascular Disorders: Extensive experience in tumor micro neurosurgery, microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm, and cerebrovascular interventions requiring high-precision operative strategies.

Intraoperative Neurophysiology & Functional Preservation: Expert use of continuous neuro-monitoring, cranial nerve mapping, and multimodal intraoperative imaging—integrating MRI, neuronavigation, and tractography to enhance safety and outcomes.

Advanced Surgical Technology & International Training: Pioneer in adopting cutting-edge neurosurgical technologies and internationally recognized trainer, directing numerous hands-on skull base and micro neurosurgery courses worldwide.

Cranial & Intracranial Microsurgery: Exposure to a wide range of craniotomies and intracranial tumor procedures including skull base lesions performed with advanced technologies such as intraoperative MRI, neuronavigation, tractography, and continuous neurophysiological monitoring to enhance safety and precision.

Spine & Spinal Cord Surgery: Training in microsurgical management of spinal and spinal cord tumors, as well as complex spine procedures involving decompression, stabilization, minimally invasive approaches, and craniovertebral junction techniques.

Skull Base & Cranial Microsurgery Foundations

  • Orientation to departmental workflow, surgical planning, and imaging (MRI, CT, tractography).
  • Observation of skull base and CPA tumor surgeries, including acoustic neuromas and complex meningiomas.
  • Introduction to microsurgical corridors, cranial nerve preservation, and endoscope-assisted techniques.

Intracranial Tumors, Functional Preservation & Neurovascular Surgery

  • Exposure to intracranial tumor resections performed with intraoperative MRI, neuronavigation, and neuro-monitoring.
  • Observation of microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm.
  • Participation in case discussions, preoperative conferences, and operative video reviews.

Spine & Spinal Cord Tumor Surgery

  • Observation of microsurgical removal of intramedullary and extramedullary spinal tumors.
  • Exposure to complex spine procedures, including decompression, stabilization, and minimally invasive techniques.
  • Introduction to intraoperative neurophysiology for spinal cord protection.

Advanced Technology, Academic Development & Multidisciplinary Engagement

  • Hands-on exposure to intraoperative technologies: MRI, neuronavigation, 3D planning, and high-definition endoscopy.
  • Participation in journal clubs, research meetings, and multidisciplinary tumor boards.
  • Final feedback session, review of learning outcomes, and certification of completion.
