Dr. Nikos Viazis, MD, PhD is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Head of the Gastroenterology Department at Evangelismos S.A. in Athens, Greece. With over two decades of clinical and academic experience, he is highly specialized in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal diseases, with a strong focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

He has served as both Principal Investigator and Sub-Investigator in multiple international Phase II and Phase III clinical trials, contributing significantly to advancing therapeutic approaches in IBD. His medical training spans Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, and he holds extensive experience in endoscopy and advanced gastroenterological procedures.

Main Areas of Interest

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Comprehensive expertise in the diagnosis and management of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, with active involvement as Principal Investigator in multiple international Phase II and III clinical trials advancing novel therapeutics.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Specialist in the evaluation and treatment of GERD and related esophageal disorders, integrating diagnostic endoscopy, pH monitoring, and advanced motility studies into patient care.

Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders: Extensive clinical experience in the assessment and management of functional GI disorders, utilizing esophageal and anorectal manometry, high-resolution impedance studies, and capsule endoscopy to guide targeted therapies.

Endoscopy (Diagnostic & Therapeutic): Skilled in both routine and advanced endoscopic procedures, including polypectomy, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), hemostasis for GI bleeding, capsule endoscopy, and interventional techniques for complex GI diseases.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding: Proficient in the rapid evaluation and endoscopic management of acute and chronic GI bleeding, with expertise in advanced therapeutic modalities for hemostasis and prevention of recurrence.

Celiac Disease: Dedicated experience in the diagnosis, follow-up, and multidisciplinary management of celiac disease, incorporating histologic evaluation, serologic monitoring, and dietary intervention strategies.

Hepatology (Hepatitis & Cirrhosis): Expertise in the diagnosis and management of viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, and cirrhosis, with advanced skills in non-invasive liver elastography for fibrosis assessment.

Pancreatic Diseases: Broad clinical knowledge in acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cystic lesions, and malignancy, supported by advanced procedural expertise in Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

 

  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): Practical training in diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP for biliary and pancreatic disorders, including stone extraction, stent placement, and stricture management.
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS): Hands-on exposure to diagnostic and interventional EUS, with applications in pancreatic disease, submucosal lesions, and biliary pathology.
  • Advanced Endoscopy: Comprehensive experience in complex therapeutic procedures, including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and advanced polypectomy techniques.
  • Polypectomy & ESD: Focused training in safe and effective removal of complex polyps and early neoplastic lesions, with emphasis on oncologic outcomes and complication management.
  • Esophageal & Anorectal Manometry: Skill development in high-resolution manometry for evaluation of motility disorders, including achalasia, esophageal spasm, anorectal dysfunction, and pelvic floor disorders.
  • Capsule Endoscopy: Training in the indications, performance, and interpretation of capsule endoscopy for small bowel disease, including obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, Crohn’s disease, and celiac disease.
  • Liver Elastography: Instruction in non-invasive liver stiffness measurement for the assessment of fibrosis, cirrhosis, and chronic liver disease progression.

 Introduction & Core Gastroenterology Exposure

  • Orientation to the Department of Gastroenterology and observership structure
  • Attendance of daily ward rounds, focusing on inpatient gastroenterology and hepatology cases
  • Outpatient exposure: General GI Clinic and IBD Clinic
  • Observation in the Endoscopy Unit (diagnostic upper and lower endoscopy, biopsy, polypectomy, hemostasis for GI bleeding)
  • Case-based teaching on GERD, IBD, and functional GI disorders
  • Participation in departmental teaching rounds and multidisciplinary discussions

 Advanced Endoscopy & Motility Disorders

  • Continued attendance of ward rounds with emphasis on motility and functional GI disorders
  • Outpatient exposure: Motility Clinic and Celiac Disease Clinic
  • Observation of advanced therapeutic endoscopy, including EMR, ESD, and complex polypectomy
  • Hands-on interpretation in Capsule Endoscopy for obscure GI bleeding and small bowel disease
  • Observation in Endoscopy Unit: esophageal and anorectal manometry, impedance studies
  • Tutorials on motility disorders and endoscopic management of GI bleeding

Hepatology & Pancreatic Diseases

  • Daily ward round participation with focus on hepatology and pancreatic cases
  • Outpatient exposure: Liver Disease Clinic and Pancreatic Disease Clinic
  • Observation of liver elastography for non-invasive fibrosis assessment
  • Endoscopy Unit exposure: ERCP and EUS procedures for biliary and pancreatic disorders
  • Case-based teaching on hepatitis, cirrhosis complications, and pancreatitis
  • Attendance at multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings in hepatology and pancreatic disease

Integration, Research & Academic Development

  • Continued ward rounds with integration across GI, hepatology, and pancreatic services
  • Outpatient exposure: Celiac Disease Clinic and revisit subspecialty GI clinics of interest
  • Endoscopy Unit rotations with focus on advanced endoscopy (ERCP, EUS, therapeutic endoscopy)
  • Case-based discussions on complex IBD flares, GI bleeding, and post-endoscopic complications
  • Introduction to ongoing IBD clinical trials and research activities led by Dr. Viazis
  • Participation in journal clubs, research seminars, and case presentations
  • Final reflection, feedback discussion, and certificate of completion with Dr. Nikos Viazis
