| Regional advisory board meeting | March | September |
| Applicants notified | April | October |
1. Eligibility & Organizational Fit
You must apply with an eligible organization, and project type matters:
Eligible applicants typically include:
✔ Registered Canadian charities with a Charitable Registration Number (CRN)
✔ Educational institutions (primary, secondary, post-secondary)
✔ Municipalities
✔ Indigenous groups/communities
❌ Individuals are not eligible — TD FEF does not fund individuals or personal initiatives.
Success predictor: Ensure organizational eligibility before investing time in the application.
2. Project Type & Focus Must Match Foundation Priorities
TD FEF focuses on environmental education and green space programs that benefit the public. Typical successful project categories include:
🌱 Schoolyard greening with learning components
🌳 Park revitalization & community gardens
🌎 Citizen science initiatives
🌤 Outdoor classrooms & nature play spaces
🌲 Tree planting and urban greening — with emphasis on native species and community engagement
Projects with hands-on environmental education, strong ties to local environmental issues, and clear benefits to the community tend to do well.
Success predictor: Your project must clearly address an environmental purpose consistent with TD FEF’s mission — not unrelated community work.
3. Community Engagement & Accessibility
Successful projects often show strong community involvement, such as:
✔ Volunteers participating in tree plantings or garden builds
✔ Local schools or Indigenous communities participating in activities
✔ Workshops or learning events for residents or students
Success predictor: Demonstrating how people will be engaged — and how the public will benefit — strengthens your application.
4. Focus on Education and Local Relevance
Especially for environmental education projects, you should show:
Why the environmental issue matters locally
How your project will educate participants
Curriculum ties (for school projects) or planned follow-up activities
Success predictor: Clear educational outcomes and community relevance elevate proposals above general activity descriptions.
5. Planning & Timing
Applications must be submitted before the project begins. TD FEF has two intakes per year with deadlines typically around January 15 and July 15.
Success predictor: Planning ahead and timing your submission so work is not already underway is essential.
6. Realistic Budget & Needs-Based Request
There’s no set minimum or maximum request, but most grants are between approximately $2,000 and $8,000.
A clear, realistic, needs-based budget tied directly to project activities (materials, tools, educational supplies, volunteer support) shows you understand resource requirements.
Success predictor: Budgets that align with typical TD FEF grant amounts and focus strictly on allowable activities (no administrative or ineligible expenses) x.
7. Compliance with Ineligible Expenses
TD FEF will not fund certain costs — and avoiding these in your budget is critical:
❌ Capital/infrastructure (gazebos, solar panels, etc.)
❌ Operating or administrative costs
❌ Conferences, travel expenses, awards or bursaries
❌ Land acquisition or private-only projects
❌ Research projects (e.g., academic research unrelated to local education)
❌ Pesticide use
Success predictor: If your budget includes only eligible expenses, your application avoids early disqualification.
8. Strong Regional Advisory Board Fit
Applications are reviewed by Regional Advisory Boards made up of local volunteers and environmental leaders; they recommend projects that resonate with local community needs.
Success predictor: Highlighting how your project aligns with local environmental priorities can influence board recommendations.
| Success Predictor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Registered eligible organization | Mandatory for eligibility |
| Alignment with TD FEF priorities | Projects must focus on environmental education/green spaces |
| Community engagement activities | Shows public benefit and volunteer involvement |
| Clear educational outcomes | Strengthens impact and relevance |
| Project planned before application | Required timing for review consideration |
| Realistic, needs-based budget | Fits typical funding range and shows planning |
| Avoidance of ineligible costs | Prevents early rejection |
| Local relevance for reviewers | Regional boards favor projects addressing local needs |
