Action Medical Research and Action for A-T have joined forces to provide additional funding to the Ataxia Telangiesctasia (A-T) research community. We invite applications for medical research that has the potential to benefit people with A-T.
Action Medical Research is a leading UK-wide charity dedicated to saving and changing children’s lives through medical research. Action funds a wide range of cutting-edge medical research most likely to deliver real benefit to babies, children and young people.
Action for A-T is on a mission to fund medical research to speed up the process of identifying a cure for A-T or treatments that delay or prevent the disabling effects of this devastating childhood condition.
Action Medical Research and Action for A-T invite applications for translational medical research projects that have the potential to treat or enable medical interventions for Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) in childhood. Projects must be led by research-active professionals based at universities, hospitals or research institutes in any country. The call is focused on child health, with interventions being proposed targeting babies, children and young people with A-T.
The fund aims to support high-quality projects for up to three years duration, providing a maximum of £250,000 per project.
It is anticipated that 4-5 projects will be funded through this call.
Applicants should complete an outline form, summarising their proposed research project by 28 January 2026 at 5pm. The link to the form is available here: Portal homepage - Action Medical Research. If the research proposed fits the Research Strategy of both Action Medical Research and Action for A-T, you will be invited to submit a full application.
Action Medical Research is a UK-wide charity funding vital research to help babies, children and young people. For 70 years we’ve helped pioneer ways to prevent disease and develop treatments benefiting millions of people. Our research has helped to beat polio in the UK, develop ultrasound in pregnancy, fight meningitis and prevent stillbirths. Action funds medical research in hospitals or research institutions across the UK aimed at preventing and treating disease and disability in children.
Action for A-T was established in 2012 to provide support to the wider A-T community and speed up the process of identifying a cure of treatments that delay or prevent the disabling effects of Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T). Action for A-T’s vision is a future where the effects of A-T are minimised, and lives are transformed. They are the largest funder of A-T research in Europe, investing more the £5.7 million in 60 A-T projects around the world.
Applications are invited for translational medical research projects that have the potential to treat or enable medical interventions for Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) in childhood.
Within child health, the emphasis is on clinical research or research at the interface between clinical and basic science that can be translated into clinical solutions in the short to medium term. A broad spectrum of biomedical research is suitable, with projects targeting treatments and cures, improving of diagnosis, therapies and assistive technologies being exemplars.
Research should be both innovative and of a high standard as judged by rigorous peer review.
Applications should:
Smaller applications to help researchers develop original and innovative ideas are also welcome. Applications may include pilot studies that will generate data enabling larger scale applications to funding bodies or practical application.

To succeed in Action Medical Research funding competitions, applications typically demonstrate the following characteristics:
🧠 1. Clear Relevance to Child Health
Action’s mission is tightly focused on medical issues affecting babies, children and young people — successful applications must align clearly with these priorities, whether investigating disease mechanisms, clinical outcomes or technology that improves child health. Action Medical Research
Tip: Frame your research question around impact on health outcomes for the target population.
🔬 2. Innovation & Clinical or Translational Focus
Project and fellowship proposals that show novel approaches, translational potential or clear paths toward improving diagnosis, treatment, prevention or quality of life tend to rank higher with reviewers. Action Medical Research
Tip: Emphasise why the project is different from standard or incremental studies and how it bridges bench-to-bedside gaps.
📊 3. Well-Defined Objectives With Feasible Methods
Compelling proposals have specific aims, realistic timelines and a clear research design appropriate to the intended outcomes.
Components reviewed include:
Scientific rationale and background
Detailed plan and methodology
Milestones and deliverables
Suitability of host institution and team capabilities
🧑🎓 4. Training Component (for Fellowships)
For Research Training Fellowships, reviewers assess whether the project will substantially enhance the applicant’s skill set and equip them for future independent research. Action Medical Research
Tip: Highlight the learning outcomes, mentoring plan, and career trajectory supported by the fellowship.
🤝 5. Peer Review & Scientific Rigor
All full applications undergo external peer review. The Scientific Advisory Panel then evaluates them considering rigor, significance and potential impact. High-scoring proposals address common peer-review criteria thoroughly. Action Medical Research
💼 6. Institutional Support & Resources
Although Action does not cover indirect institutional costs, strong institutional backing (e.g., access to facilities, collaborative networks, prior successes) strengthens credibility.
✔ Start early: Begin preparing outline applications well before the deadline to refine aims and obtain institutional sign-off. Action Medical Research
✔ Review past funded projects: Look at examples of previously funded research to understand scope and impact. Action Medical Research
✔ Tailor the narrative: Make clear links between your project goals and Action’s child health priorities.
✔ Clarify budget support: Ensure budget requests align with allowable costs (salary, consumables, dedicated equipment) and avoid indirect costs. Action Medical Research
✔ Engage mentors: For fellowship applications, include strong supervision and training plans.
