The PFF Scholars program is designed to help talented researchers obtain independent funding to continue their studies. The PFF aims to support projects that offer a high likelihood of improving the understanding of pulmonary fibrosis in the areas of basic science, translational research, clinical research, epidemiological research, and health services research.
Each PFF Scholars class tackles some of the most urgent questions about pulmonary fibrosis. Our goal is to accelerate the Scholars’ research and support them in securing more substantial grants for their impactful work.
The primary goal of awarding grants is to support projects that offer a high likelihood of improving the understanding of pulmonary fibrosis in the following areas:
Submitted grants are reviewed by a committee of experts. Applications will be evaluated and scored based on the following criteria:
The Foundation’s Research Review Committeethis link will open a new tab., which is comprised of a wide-ranging group of international experts, administers the peer-review process.
1. PFF Scholars Program (Core Research Grants)
The PFF Scholars Program is PFF’s primary competitive grant mechanism for emerging investigators in pulmonary fibrosis research. It is designed to seed research and foster career development, helping recipients generate independent data and progress toward larger external funding.Default+1
Target Applicants:
Early-career researchers (postdoctoral fellows, instructors, assistant professors, or equivalent).
Must be actively pursuing a research career in PF/ILD science.
Typically must hold positions that allow independent research (e.g., postdoc, junior faculty) and be within ~12 years of terminal degree.Trialect
Funding Level & Duration:
Up to $100,000 total awarded per scholar over two years (often ~$50,000 per year).
Funds support direct research costs, mentorship, and career development activities.Default+1
Scientific Scope:
Scholars research projects that address basic biology, pathogenesis, clinical science, epidemiology, translational mechanisms, health services research, or biomarkers directly relevant to PF/ILD.Default
Program Features:
Recipients are assigned a PFF Scholar Sponsor (established leader in the field) who provides mentorship and advocacy.
Scholars gain networking, visibility, and leadership opportunities within the PF research community.Trialect
Review & Selection:
Applications are peer-reviewed by PFF’s Research Review Committee comprising national/international PF experts. Reviewers evaluate scientific significance, feasibility, career impact, and likelihood to catalyse future funding.Default
Typical Awards:
Recent cohorts include projects on fibrosis mechanisms, imaging modalities, symptom management, immune pathways, and potential therapeutic targets.
When evaluating PFF Scholars proposals (and ancillary research submissions), reviewers typically prioritise:
✔ Strong Relevance to PF/ILD
The project must clearly address pulmonary fibrosis biology, clinical science, diagnostics, therapies, epidemiology, or care delivery — not general lung disease unrelated to fibrotic ILD.Default
✔ Scientific Quality & Innovation
Proposals should include:
Clear hypotheses or research questions
Sound, appropriate methodology
Defined milestones and deliverables that are feasible within the grant period
Preliminary evidence or rationale supporting feasibility and impact
✔ Investigator Potential & Career Impact
Because the program fosters emerging research leaders, reviewers look for:
Evidence of prior productivity and relevant training
Plans for career development (e.g., progression toward independent funding)
Institutional support and mentorship structure
✔ Feasibility & Resource Justification
Budgets and timelines should be realistic for the planned work and match the modest scale of a seed/graduation award. For ancillary studies, analytic plans should demonstrate access to appropriate statisticians and data understanding.
✔ Translation and Future Funding Pathway
Successful projects often articulate how outcomes will position the investigator to compete for larger grants (e.g., NIH, DoD, foundation awards), contribute to drug development paradigms, or inform clinical trial design.
✔ Align with PFF’s mission: Focus on pulmonary fibrosis/ILD, not broader lung disease without a fibrotic component.Default
✔ Craft clear aims and milestones appropriate for a 2-year project.
✔ Include career development narrative: Explain how award helps establish independence.
✔ Engage a mentor or sponsor early: A PFF Scholar Sponsor strengthens the application.Trialect
✔ Leverage PFF resources: Consider data from the PFF Registry where relevant to hypotheses.Default
| Program | Target | Focus | Typical Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| PFF Scholars Program | Early-career PF researchers | PF/ILD biomedical, translational, clinical, or epidemiological research | Up to $100,000 over 2 years Default |
| Registry Ancillary Studies | Clinical/translational investigators | Studies using PFF Registry data/biosamples | Proposal-based data access Default |
🔍 When PFF Funding Is a Good Fit
✔ You are an emerging investigator (postdoc, junior faculty) focused on pulmonary fibrosis or related ILDs.Default
✔ You need seed funding and mentorship to generate preliminary data or career momentum.Trialect
✔ You want to leverage real-world PF patient data for clinical or translational research.
The PFF aims to support projects that offer a high likelihood of improving the understanding of pulmonary fibrosis in the areas of basic science, translational research, clinical research, epidemiological research, and health services research.
