The Peter Gilgan Canada Gairdner Momentum Award annually recognizes two mid-career investigators (typically 10-15 years past their first independent research appointment) working in Canada who in their last six active years have produced exceptional scientific research contributions with continued potential for impact on human health. The Gairdner Foundation welcomes submissions from all areas of health research including but not limited to discovery, clinical, global health, and population science and translational research.
Successful nominees will have produced a focused, cohesive body of scientific research which has made a significant impact in health research. Consideration will also be given to a nominee’s contributions to the growth and enrichment of the Canadian research community.
Quality nominations are essential to the evaluation process for this award. Nominations are active for the year of submission only and must be resubmitted in following years to be considered again. Two awards will be given each year. Awards cannot be shared.
The Momentum Award has a two-stage nomination process:
For the Canada Gairdner International Award, the strongest predictor is a genuinely original contribution that has significantly increased understanding of human biology or disease. The award recognizes outstanding biomedical scientists for major discoveries, not simply strong productivity or a long academic career.
The strongest candidates typically have:
Gairdner recognition is generally based on a specific discovery or cohesive body of work, rather than cumulative lifetime achievement. A successful nomination clearly identifies:
A nomination built around one clear scientific contribution is usually stronger than a broad summary of an entire career.
The Foundation was established to recognize discoveries with major impact on scientific progress and human health. Competitive nominees typically have work that has:
The Foundation’s history emphasizes recognition of discoveries that have had major impact on both science and human health.
For discoveries involving several scientists, the nomination must clearly establish the nominee’s specific intellectual and experimental contribution.
Strong nominations explain:
The International Award can recognize equal contributors or scientists who made parallel discoveries, making accurate attribution especially important.
Recent Gairdner laureates are consistently recognized for seminal discoveries or contributions. This indicates that the strongest candidates have work that:
Strong science alone is not sufficient; the contribution should be field-defining.
A major discovery becomes more competitive when its importance has been confirmed by the broader scientific community.
Strong indicators include:
This helps demonstrate that the contribution represents lasting scientific impact rather than a promising but still uncertain result.
For the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, the strongest predictor is scientifically based research that has measurably improved the health and well-being of people facing health inequities worldwide.
Strong candidates typically demonstrate:
For this award, real-world health impact is more important than biomedical discovery alone.
The Peter Gilgan Canada Gairdner Momentum Award has a different profile. It recognizes mid-career researchers working in Canada who have produced a focused, cohesive body of exceptional research, particularly during their recent active research years, with continued potential for impact on human health.
The strongest candidates demonstrate:
Successful nominees generally have strong evidence of international scientific standing, such as:
However, reputation supports the nomination; it does not replace the requirement for a clearly identifiable major contribution.
The Foundation explicitly emphasizes that quality nominations are essential to the evaluation process. A competitive nomination should be accurate, current, complete, and focused on the specific discovery or contribution being recognized.
The strongest nomination packages typically:
