To be eligible for the Focus Grant, both the applicant and host eligibility criteria must be met.

Applicant:

a)        Eligibility to submit an application is limited to Postdocs, Established Researchers, and Scientific Collaborators employed on a fixed-term contract at ETH Zurich who hold at least an 80% position. For applicants employed at less than 80%, the host must be willing to support an increase to 80% during the Focus Grant.

b)       Employment of the applicant at ETH Zurich must be guaranteed for at least six months following the Focus Grant submission deadline. For applicants approaching the six-year employment limit as a Postdoc, please confirm with your HR partner whether a contract extension is possible. Established Researchers approaching the six-year employment limit are ineligible to apply.

c)        Focus Grant applicants must have a genuine intention to submit a major early-career grant proposal and should already have chosen the programme to which they intend to apply (e.g. ERC Starting Grant). To be eligible for the Focus Grant, the applicant must match the eligibility criteria for their target programme. The target grant does not need to be carried out at ETH.

d)       Focus Grant applicants must have a track record that is competitive with respect to their discipline. We strongly encourage applicants to scrutinize their own publication record before applying.

e)        During the Focus Grant, applicants must agree to dedicate 50% of their working time to preparing their proposal and attending the bootcamp.

Receiving a Focus Grant in no way indicates the intention of ETH Zurich to serve as a host institution for an ERC, SNSF, or any other grant. Thus, no letters of support can be issued through the Focus Grant programme; these must be obtained via the appropriate procedures.

Host:

The host must have a guaranteed position at ETH Zurich for the duration of the Focus Grant. In addition, the host must agree to:

1.      Prolong the applicant’s employment at ETH Zurich by two months.* This prolongation does not count towards the eligibility window described above.

2.      In situations where the applicant is employed at less than 80%, pledge an increase to (at minimum) 80% employment during the Focus Grant.

3.      Contribute 50% of the applicant's personnel costs during the Focus Grant period (inclusive of salary, social security, and family allowance).

4.      Reduce the applicant’s core responsibilities by 50% during the Focus Grant.

Applications not complying with the eligibility criteria will be rejected on formal grounds.

Successful applicants may not reapply to the programme. Unsuccessful applicants may reapply.

* In situations where this extension would surpass the maximum duration of postdoc employment at ETH, the host must be willing to promote the applicant to the position of Established Researcher for the duration of the requisite extension.
