The McKnight Neurobiology of Brain Disorders Award (NBD Award) assists scientists working to apply the knowledge achieved through basic research to human brain disorders, and who demonstrate a commitment to equitable and inclusive lab environments. 

Each year, up to four awards are given. Awards provide $100,000 per year for three years. Funds may be used toward a variety of research activities, and not more than 10% of grant funds may be used for the applicant and any co-principal investigator’s combined salaries. 

Intellectual property rights resulting from the research – including patents, copyrights, processes, or formulae – will be retained by the institution of the awardee. The information derived from the research will be published in a form that is available to the interested public and made available to the public on a nondiscriminatory basis. 

Use of Award Funds

We are interested in proposals that address the biological mechanisms of neurological and psychiatric disorders. This includes proposals that provide mechanistic insights into neurological functions at the synaptic, cellular, molecular, genetic or behavioral level across different species, including humans and vertebrate and invertebrate model organisms. A new additional area of interest is the contribution of the environment to brain disorders. We are particularly interested in proposals that incorporate new approaches and in those that provide potential paths for therapeutic interventions. Collaborative and cross-disciplinary applications are encouraged. 

Environmental Contributions to Brain Disorders

Early-life environmental stress is a powerful disposing factor for later neurological and psychiatric disorders. Studies show communities of color are at higher risk for these stressors, which range from environmental (e.g. climate, nutrition, exposure to chemicals, pollution) to social (e.g. family, education, housing, poverty). From a clinical perspective, understanding how environmental factors contribute to brain disease is essential for developing effective therapies. 

Benefits

In this competition, up to four McKnight awardees will be selected to receive three years of support, beginning July 1, 2027.  The total award is $300,000, paid in equal installments of $100,000 in 2027, 2028, and 2029. Not more than 10% of grant funds may be used for indirect costs, and not more than 10% of grant funds may be used for the applicant and any co-principal investigator’s combined salaries. 

As with our Scholar program, a huge benefit of receiving a McKnight award is the chance to join a community of the nation’s best neuroscientists that they will continue to learn from, interact and collaborate with over their lifetime. Award winners attend the McKnight Conference on Neuroscience for the three years after receiving the award, and then return to the conference every three years. No other community in neuroscience has this kind of longitudinal impact and that demonstrates such a strong sense of community.  

The conference has met in Aspen, Colorado since 1998, and invites over 100 current and previous McKnight awardees every year. The bulk of the conference involves third year current awardees sharing the results of their research and ample opportunities for informal scientific discussion to fuel new ideas and collaborations. An entire session is devoted to a neurological disorder (e.g. Alzheimer’s, Autism, Depression, among others) with specialists invited to speak and host a Q & A. 

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A genuinely important neuroscience question

This is the fundamental predictor.

McKnight's Scholar guidance asks applicants to make the central scientific question immediately clear and explain why someone outside the applicant's specialty should care about it. The NBD program similarly requires a clear clinical problem and specific aims.

Strong proposal characteristics:

• Addresses a major unresolved neuroscience problem.
• Goes beyond incremental characterization.
• Clearly identifies what is currently unknown.
• Explains why solving the problem matters to neuroscience or human health.
• States a focused central hypothesis/question.

Weak approach:
"Study X because it has not been studied."

Stronger approach:
"Resolve a fundamental mechanism that could change how a major neurological disorder is understood."

2. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Innovation and distinctive scientific viewpoint

McKnight places unusually strong emphasis on creative, original science.

For Scholar Awards, the proposed work should represent one of the laboratory's most innovative and impactful directions. The FAQ specifically asks applicants to demonstrate a distinctive scientific viewpoint.

Recent 2026 Scholar awardees illustrate this breadth: projects involve neural computation, social behavior, motor control, neural evolution, transcriptional mechanisms, and computational approaches to high-dimensional neural data.

High-value innovation includes:

• A new conceptual model.
• A previously unrecognized biological mechanism.
• A novel experimental system.
• A new way of interpreting a neuroscience problem.
• Cross-disciplinary approaches that open new scientific possibilities.

3. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Transformative potential / ability to change understanding

McKnight is particularly interested in research that could produce a substantial conceptual advance, rather than simply adding another dataset.

The Scholar FAQ explicitly encourages ambitious work and asks applicants to explain the best-case scenario for what the field will understand if the research succeeds.

A strong proposal should therefore answer:

If this works, what will neuroscientists understand that they cannot understand today?

For NBD proposals, this becomes:

How could the mechanistic discovery ultimately improve diagnosis, prevention, treatment, or cure?

The NBD program specifically asks applicants to explain how their research will translate biological discoveries into improved human health.

4. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Scientific rigor + credible experimental strategy

McKnight does not require an applicant to eliminate scientific risk. In fact, the Scholar FAQ says intellectual risk can be high, provided that the proposed approach is credible and there is a compelling reason to believe the central ideas can be tested.

Strong applications therefore balance:

Ambition + feasibility + rigorous testing

Important elements include:

• Clear hypotheses.
• Appropriate experimental design.
• Well-defined critical experiments.
• Alternative outcomes.
• Appropriate controls.
• Logical interpretation of results.
• A credible path through technical challenges.

For ambitious new directions, preliminary evidence is not mandatory, but McKnight says it can help demonstrate feasibility.

5. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong fit with the specific McKnight award

There are two substantially different routes.

The NBD program explicitly focuses on biological mechanisms of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

The Scholar program is aimed at scientists in the early stages of establishing independent laboratories and research careers.

Important: A technically excellent project can still be poorly positioned if it does not fit the particular award mechanism.

6. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Applicant's demonstrated ability to execute the science

McKnight evaluates not only the idea but whether the laboratory can actually deliver it.

Its Scholar checklist asks applicants to show that their lab can achieve results through evidence such as:

• Publications.
• Conference presentations.
• Independent work performed during postdoctoral training.
• Prior accomplishments relevant to the proposed research. 

For NBD applications, applicants submit NIH biosketches and representative previous publications; the committee invites only a small group of applications to interview.

Success predictor:
The proposal should make a convincing connection between:

7. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Ambition balanced with tractability

McKnight explicitly asks applicants to think differently from conventional grant-writing approaches.

The Scholar FAQ says proposals may be highly ambitious and intellectually risky, but the approach must remain credible. Applicants should show why the critical ideas can actually be tested.

Therefore, avoid both extremes:

Too conservative:
Small incremental experiment unlikely to change the field.

Too speculative:
Huge vision with no credible critical experiment.

Ideal:
High-risk/high-reward scientific question + a small number of decisive experiments.

8. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Clear communication to scientists outside the specialty

This is particularly important for McKnight.

The Scholar application guidance asks:

Why should someone from outside your field care about your research?

The six-point checklist also asks whether the central question is easy to identify and whether the applicant has clearly explained the significance of the work.

A successful application should therefore be understandable to a broad neuroscience review committee, not just experts in the applicant's narrow subfield.

Use:

9. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Commitment to an equitable and inclusive scientific environment

This is not merely a generic institutional statement.

McKnight explicitly states that it seeks applicants committed to mentoring neuroscientists from underrepresented groups and equitable, inclusive laboratory environments.

The Scholar application requires a Diversity & Inclusion Statement describing specific actions taken beyond the confines of the laboratory, with emphasis on personal experience and concrete actions rather than only philosophy.

For NBD applicants, commitment to equitable and inclusive lab environments is also explicitly part of the award description.

Strong evidence:

• Mentoring.
• Outreach.
• Recruitment.
• Training opportunities.
• Concrete institutional/community activities.
• Demonstrated actions rather than generic statements.

10. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Career stage and eligibility alignment

Eligibility is a major practical predictor because McKnight's awards are deliberately designed for particular career stages.

For the 2027 Scholar Award, applicants must be independent investigators at U.S. nonprofit research institutions and Assistant Professors (or equivalent) who have served at that rank for less than five years. The current eligibility cutoff means the Assistant Professor appointment cannot have started before December 1, 2021, subject to permitted exceptions.

For the 2027 NBD Award, investigators must be independent investigators at U.S. nonprofit research institutions and have held a tenured or tenure-track faculty position for at least three years.

Thus, career-stage fit is not a minor administrative issue—it determines which McKnight competition an investigator can enter.
