Young Investigator Award in Pediatric Brain Tumors

American Society of Clinical Oncology

The Conquer Cancer Young Investigator Award (YIA) in Pediatric Brain Tumors provides funding to promising investigators to encourage and promote quality research in clinical oncology with a focus on pediatric brain tumors. The purpose of this award is to fund physicians during the transition from a fellowship or training program to a faculty appointment. This is a mentored award and the research project is conducted under the guidance of an experienced mentor in the proposed research area. Applications are accepted from U.S. and international applicants.

Funding Available

The total award amount is $50,000 for one year, payable in two equal installments. Conquer Cancer has funding for one YIA in Pediatric Brain Tumors which will be awarded to the most meritorious applications evaluated for this competition.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

The following rankings synthesize the published criteria across ASCO/Conquer Cancer research awards. The exact requirements differ by mechanism.

1

★★★★★

Clinical oncology relevance

Address a meaningful cancer-related question, with clear relevance to patients, clinical decision-making, treatment, diagnosis, outcomes or cancer care delivery.

2

★★★★★

Scientific merit and methodological rigor

Use a clear hypothesis, suitable design, appropriate outcomes and analysis, and a realistic plan for interpreting results. Explain the knowledge gap the study addresses.

3

★★★★★

Innovation and potential impact

Demonstrate how the research could advance cancer science or care beyond current knowledge and practice. Avoid overstating benefits not supported by the proposed work.

4

★★★★★

Applicant qualifications and research potential

Show relevant training, productivity, skills, commitment to oncology research and evidence that the applicant can carry out the proposed project.

5

★★★★☆

Mentor strength and institutional support

Identify an appropriate mentor, explain the mentoring plan and demonstrate access to the expertise, facilities, data and patient populations needed.

6

★★★★☆

Career development and future independence

Explain how the project builds the applicant's research expertise, publications, collaborations and ability to compete for future funding.

7

★★★★☆

Feasibility and resources

Match the scope to the award period and budget. Identify preliminary evidence, recruitment or data-access arrangements, milestones, and potential risks.

8

★★★★☆

Patient-oriented or translational relevance

For awards such as the Career Development Award, demonstrate a patient-oriented clinical or translational research focus involving human subjects. Predominantly animal or in-vitro projects are not eligible for that mechanism.

9

★★★★☆

Alignment with the specific competition

Select the correct award or special competition—for example, pediatric cancers, global oncology, genomics, or an eligible disease-specific program. Confirm that the project's topic and the applicant's career stage fit that call.

10

★★★★☆

Eligibility and application compliance

Meet the relevant physician qualification, career-stage, medical-license, ASCO membership, research-time, mentorship and submission requirements. Ineligible applications cannot be rescued by scientific quality alone.

• A physician (MD, DO, or international equivalent) working in any country. An MD/PhD is eligible if both degrees are completed prior to the start of the grant period.

• At the time of application submission, the applicant must satisfy at least one of the following career stage criteria:

o Within the last two years of their final accredited oncology subspecialty training or fellowship program at an academic medical institution. Eligible programs include, but are not limited to, medical oncology, hematology-oncology, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology or radiation oncology residency.

o Enrolled in an oncology training program where the dedicated, protected research year is structured to occur during the first year of the program (e.g. standard gynecologic oncology or specialized surgical oncology fellowship).

o Completed their subspecialty training and is within their first year of initial full-time academic faculty appointment (including instructor-level positions).

NOTE: Applicants who do not meet any of the defined career stage criteria and have questions about their eligibility must contact grants@conquer.org before initiating an application. Inquiries must include the applicant’s current CV alongside a detailed explanation of their career stage.

• Within 10 years of obtaining their medical degree at the time of application submission. An exception to this criterion may be granted to foreign medical graduates whose medical degree completion may fall outside of the 10-year cutoff and to fellows currently enrolled in prolonged, specialized subspecialty tracks. Please see the FAQ for more information or contact grants@conquer.org.

• Planning an investigative career in oncology.

• Have a valid, active medical license in the country where the research will be conducted during the YIA award term.

• Working in an oncology laboratory or clinical research setting.

• Have a mentor from the sponsoring institution. If the mentor is not an ASCO member, a supporting letter from an ASCO member from the sponsoring institution must be included.

• A current ASCO member or has submitted a membership application with the grant application. To apply for new membership, or to renew an existing membership, visit asco.org/membership.

• Able to commit at least 60% of their time to research (applies to total research activities overall, not just the proposed YIA project) during the award period.

Eligible applicants may apply to both the YIA general and special competitions. However, they may only accept the first formal grant offer they receive, Individuals are permitted to hold only one active Conquer Cancer award at a time.
