The John Dystel Prize for Multiple Sclerosis Research is awarded jointly by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the American Academy of Neurology. The Prize, currently in the amount of $40,000, recognizes outstanding contributions to research that have led to breakthroughs in the understanding, prevention, treatment, or cure of multiple sclerosis. The prize recognizes significant and exciting work that has changed the way we think about multiple sclerosis. Only accomplishments directly related to multiple sclerosis will be considered; advances in other central nervous system inflammatory diseases will be considered only insofar as they advance the understanding of multiple sclerosis. While service to and leadership of the multiple sclerosis community will be considered, innovative research with lasting impact on the understanding of and/or treatment of multiple sclerosis is the primary criterion for selection. Recent and ongoing active research is a major consideration; the Dystel Prize is not meant to be a lifetime achievement award.
Achievement of impactful advancement in the understanding of and/or treatment of multiple sclerosis; must be actively engaged in basic or clinical research related to multiple sclerosis. Applicants do not need to be an AAN member to apply. Industry employees are not eligible to apply.
