The Elisabeth Pickett Research Award makes funds available for small research grants for basic, translation or clinical urologic research. The awards may be used to continue or supplement a current project or to initiate new study.
The 2026 Elisabeth Pickett Research Award is $10,000, payable to the institution where SWIU Research activity will be completed. The award will be presented at the SWIU at the AUA Annual Meeting. The award recipient is expected to present a five-minute summary of their work.
Applications will be reviewed by the SWIU Research Committee based on the scientific merit of the research proposal (i.e. does the proposal have a hypothesis, how well does the proposed research test the hypothesis, etc.) along with determining portions of project that can be accommodated by the amount of funding available. Selections are made by the Research Committee and are subject to the final approval of the SWIU Board of Directors. The Elisabeth Pickett Research Award operates without discrimination as to age, race, religion, sex, handicap or national origin in the selection of participants.
At the completion of the project, awardees must submit a brief project summary for review by SWIU. The summary shall include results of research in two forms: (a) technical report (b) a report in lay terms.
1. Strong Urologic Research Focus (Clinical, Translational, or Basic)
The research award expects work directly related to urology — whether clinical projects, translational research, or basic science with urologic relevance. swiu.org+2swiu.org+2
For translational and clinical proposals: relevance to patient care, urologic disease, or surgical/therapeutic innovation tends to be favoured.
Predictor: Urology-centric proposal (not generic surgery or unrelated specialty) with clear clinical/translational importance.
2. Realistic, Well-Defined Research or Career Development Plan
Because many SWIU awards (especially research awards) are modest (e.g., ~US $10,000 for the Pickett Award) cairibu.urology.wisc.edu+1, successful proposals usually:
Have a tight, feasible scope (often pilot/early-phase work)
Define clear aims and deliverables (e.g., data generation, proof-of-concept, manuscript, preliminary outcomes)
Include timeline and use of funds aligned with award size
Predictor: Focused, realistic projects with deliverables that match funding scale.
3. Investigator Eligibility & Commitment (Women or Under-represented Gender in Urology)
SWIU is oriented toward supporting women and under-represented genders in urology — applications from eligible candidates (residents, fellows, early-career urologists, research fellows) get priority. swiu.org+2swiu.org+2
Demonstrated interest and commitment to urology research/career, especially as a woman or under-represented gender, is often implicit in successful applications.
Predictor: Applicant belongs to the target demographic, with clear career commitment in urology.
4. For Training / Travel Awards: Clear Benefit to Career Development or Knowledge Sharing
For travel awards or conference support (e.g., Resident Travel Award), successful applications show how the funding helps networking, education, mentorship, or dissemination. swiu.org+1
Proposals that articulate how attendance or collaboration will enhance skills, partnerships, or future research often do better.
Predictor: Well-justified use of award for professional development or research visibility.
5. Emphasis on Mentorship, Leadership, and Professional Growth (Beyond Just Research)
SWIU offers mentoring and leadership awards (e.g., Christina Manthos Mentoring Award, Jean Fourcroy Leadership Award). swiu.org+1
Applications that highlight mentorship plans, leadership goals, community building, or efforts to support women in urology may receive favourable consideration.
Predictor: Strong elements of mentorship support, leadership potential, and community/peer development.
6. Commitment to Dissemination and Scientific Contribution
SWIU-supported research is expected to contribute to urology literature or practice improvements. Proposals that include clear dissemination plans (publications, presentations) align with the society’s goals. swiu.org+2swiu.org+2
Projects should ideally generate data or findings that advance urologic knowledge or care — not purely academic exercises without clinical relevance.
Predictor: Realistic plan for scholarship, dissemination, and impact in urology community.
7. Demonstrated Capability & Institutional Support (if Required)
For research grants, you must be able to carry out the project: access to lab or clinical resources, collaborators, ethical/IRB support if needed, budget planning.
Strong applications often show institutional backing or infrastructure that supports the proposed work.
Predictor: Evidence of feasibility and institutional support strengthens application strength.
If you want to prepare a grant or award application to SWIU, you should:
Ensure your proposal is directly relevant to urology — clinical care, surgical practice, basic or translational urologic research, or training/education in urology.
Keep the project scope realistic (especially if applying for smaller research awards) — ideally pilot or foundational work with clear aims/outcomes.
Emphasize your identity or background (woman or under-represented gender in urology), if applicable — SWIU’s mission supports such candidates.
For training/travel grants — articulate clearly how the award will help your career development, networking, collaboration, or dissemination.
If applying for mentoring or leadership awards — highlight past or planned mentorship/leadership activities, commitment to supporting junior colleagues, and community contribution.
Plan for dissemination or knowledge translation — how your work will contribute to urology practice or science.
Ensure you have resources and institutional support required for research (labs, clinical access, ethics, collaborators).
Prepare a concise, clear, and well-organized application — with aims, methodology, timeline, budget, and proof of feasibility.
Eligible candidates include: trained urologists, (MD /DO), urology residents, urology fellows, research fellows (PhD) with a research interest in urologic or related diseases and dysfunctions. Candidates must be members of Society of Women in Urology, Inc.
