EHA Research Mobility Grant

European Hematology Association

EHA Research Mobility Grants are designed to support the professional development of young scientists by enabling mobility and facilitating a visit to a research group in another institute. Both institutes should have complementary expertise, as this visit is also intended to promote collaboration between the institutes.

Successful applicants can receive up to €7,500 within Europe and €10,000 outside of Europe to support mobility that can last up to three months.

What an EHA Research Mobility Grant covers

An EHA Research Mobility Grant covers:

A visit of up to three months
Travel and accommodation expenses up to €7,500 for travel within Europe and up to €10,000 outside Europe
A small contribution towards lab consumables—which must be approved by the EHA Grants Manager before you submit your application

If the project requires a visit longer than three months, you can ask for an extension for up to six months. In this case, you must provide an explanation on your application form. Please contact the EHA Grants Manager (grants@ehaweb.org) for more details.

An EHA Research Mobility Grant does not cover:

Mobility that lasts longer than six months
Overhead costs
Your salary
Travel support for other people
Funding for existing projects
Purchase of equipment or other items supporting your stay at the host institute (such as furniture, car, computer, etc.)

If this grant does not fully cover your expenses, you must share details of how you’ll cover them on your application form. 

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Direct relevance to hematology and laboratory-based research (highest predictor)

This is the most important predictor.

Eligible projects should focus on:

Benign hematology
Hematologic malignancies
Stem cell biology
Hemostasis and thrombosis
Hemoglobinopathies
Bone marrow failure

Immunohematology
Precision hematology

EHA Research Grants specifically support basic and translational laboratory-based hematology research. Purely clinical research, health economics, and other non-laboratory-based projects are generally not eligible, unless they involve a strong translational laboratory component linked to a clinical trial.

External reviewers explicitly assess the significance and impact of the proposed research.

Competitive proposals should address:

Applicants must have support from their academic department and institution. Letters of support should clearly describe the institutional commitment and available facilities.

8. High-quality mentorship and career development (high predictor for junior and physician-scientist awards)

For early-career applicants, EHA requires a mentor letter describing a structured mentoring plan.

Mentorship quality is particularly important for Junior Research Grants and Physician Scientist Research Grants.

You’re eligible if:

You’re an EHA member
The home and host institutes are academic research centers or proven equivalents
The home and host institutes are in different countries and at least one of them is in Europe
You have the support of an academic department and institute
Your application relates to basic and translational lab-based research in hematology

Note: Purely clinical research projects, projects in health economics, and other non-lab-based research are ineligible.

In addition, at least one of the following must apply:

You are a PhD student
You received your PhD within one year of the current application deadline
You are an MD in training (with residency and within one year of hematology accreditation), with a keen interest in pursuing a career in research
