EHA Physician Scientist Research Grant

European Hematology Association

The EHA Physician Scientist Research Grant is a type of EHA Research Grant, which can provide up to €240,000 for three years

Specific criteria for the EHA Physician Scientist Research Grant

Our Physician Scientist Research Grant is suitable for physician scientists who are:

  • Involved in patient care
  • Currently carrying out basic or translational lab-based research in hematology
  • An MD or equivalent

You must be within eight years of one of the following (the most recent applies):

  • PhD graduation
  • MD graduation
  • Hematology training or equivalent

You must also have:

  • A proven track record in research by publication
  • At least 50% protected time for performing the research project—and be able to provide a letter of support by your head of department about where the research will be performed

Note: MDs currently in hematology training are welcome to apply; however, MDs currently enrolled in a PhD program are not eligible

Your application is more likely to be successful if the research topic relates to the specialty in your clinic. For example, if you are:

  • For lab-based work, developing a mouse model in myeloproliferative neoplasms
  • For clinic-based work, treating myeloproliferative neoplasms

Topics-in-Focus Research Grants: If your research focuses on hemoglobinopathies, you will have a competitive advantage in the selection process. Please select the ‘Topics-in-Focus Physician Scientist Research Grant’ on your application form.

Extending the reach of our grants: If you are operating in a country less-represented among EHA grantees, you will have a competitive advantage in the selection process.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Direct relevance to hematology and laboratory-based research (highest predictor)

This is the most important predictor.

Eligible projects should focus on:

  • Benign hematology
  • Hematologic malignancies
  • Stem cell biology
  • Hemostasis and thrombosis
  • Hemoglobinopathies
  • Bone marrow failure
  • Transfusion medicine
  • Immunohematology
  • Precision hematology

EHA Research Grants specifically support basic and translational laboratory-based hematology research. Purely clinical research, health economics, and other non-laboratory-based projects are generally not eligible, unless they involve a strong translational laboratory component linked to a clinical trial.

2. Scientific significance and impact (very high predictor)

External reviewers explicitly assess the significance and impact of the proposed research.

Competitive proposals should address:

  • An important unmet need
  • A major biological or clinical question
  • Problems with broad relevance to hematology
  • Research capable of advancing the field

Projects should clearly explain why the work matters and how it could change hematology research or patient care.

3. Innovation and originality (very high predictor)

Novelty is one of the principal review criteria.

Strong proposals typically include:

  • Novel concepts
  • Innovative methodologies
  • New disease mechanisms
  • Emerging technologies
  • Creative experimental approaches
  • High-risk/high-gain ideas

Reviewers explicitly evaluate whether the objectives are ambitious and beyond the current state of the art.

4. Rigorous methodology and feasibility (very high predictor)

Applications should demonstrate:

  • Clear hypotheses
  • Appropriate experimental design
  • Robust methodology
  • Sound statistical planning
  • Realistic milestones
  • Feasible timelines

Reviewers explicitly score both the appropriateness of methods and the feasibility of the proposal.

5. Strong translational potential (very high predictor)

EHA emphasizes research that bridges laboratory discoveries with clinical application.

Competitive projects often involve:

  • Biomarker development
  • Precision hematology
  • Translational studies
  • Functional genomics
  • Target validation
  • Preclinical therapeutic development

While basic science is fully supported, applications are strengthened by a clear pathway toward future clinical benefit.

6. Outstanding investigator track record and potential (very high predictor)

Reviewers explicitly evaluate:

  • Publication record
  • International standing
  • Scientific expertise
  • Leadership potential
  • Research productivity

For junior grants, the emphasis is on future independence and leadership potential, while advanced grants place greater weight on an established research record.

7. Excellent host institution and scientific environment (very high predictor)

The quality of the research environment is an explicit review criterion.

Strong applications demonstrate:

  • A leading academic research center
  • Appropriate infrastructure
  • Access to specialized technologies
  • Strong mentorship
  • Institutional commitment
  • Collaborative expertise

Applicants must have support from their academic department and institution. Letters of support should clearly describe the institutional commitment and available facilities.

8. High-quality mentorship and career development (high predictor for junior and physician-scientist awards)

For early-career applicants, EHA requires a mentor letter describing a structured mentoring plan.

Competitive applications demonstrate:

  • Strong mentorship
  • Career-development strategy
  • Research independence plan
  • Leadership development
  • Appropriate protected research time (for Physician Scientist Grants)

Mentorship quality is particularly important for Junior Research Grants and Physician Scientist Research Grants.

9. Well-justified and realistic budget (high predictor)

Budget review is an explicit component of evaluation.

Strong budgets should include:

  • Clear itemization
  • Appropriate justification
  • Realistic costs
  • Alignment with project aims
  • Efficient use of requested resources

Reviewers assess whether the proposed work can reasonably be completed within the available funding and timeline.

10. Collaboration and future funding potential (high predictor)

Several EHA funding mechanisms—including Innovation Grants, Bilateral Collaborative Grants, and Research Mobility Grants—place special emphasis on collaboration.

Competitive projects often demonstrate:

  • Complementary expertise
  • International collaboration
  • Interdisciplinary partnerships
  • Potential for future European or international funding
  • Expansion into larger collaborative research programs

For Innovation Grants, reviewers explicitly evaluate whether the project can support a subsequent application for a larger funding opportunity. Research Mobility Grants likewise prioritize complementary expertise between the home and host institutions to build lasting collaborations.

You’re eligible if:

  • You’re an EHA member
  • Your institute is an academic research center or proven equivalent in Europe
  • You have the support of an academic department and institute
  • Your application relates to basic and translational lab-based research in hematology

Your application will not be eligible if it relates to:

  • Purely clinical research projects
  • Projects in health economics
  • Other non-lab-based research

However, it may be eligible if it relates to the translational part of a clinical trial. In this case, it must be both relevant and novel.
