Clinical Research Grants are intended for established, experienced, independent investigators affiliated with a research or academic institution whose proposed projects have a clinical focus and investigate hypotheses directly related to Dravet syndrome. Proposals are scored according to NIH guidelines based on the quality of preliminary data, research design, feasibility, investigator’s qualifications, and overall impact. Grants are awarded for $250,000 over 2 years (beginning January 1 of each year), with indirect costs not to exceed 10% of the award.
Investigators applying for a research grant should ensure their proposed project addresses the needs of the Dravet syndrome community and DSF’s mission to support research toward better treatments and a cure for Dravet syndrome.
DSF Clinical Priority Areas include:
🧠 1. Focus on Dravet Syndrome or SCN1A-Related Research
Prior research directly involving:
SCN1A mutations, sodium channel dysfunction, or genetic epilepsy models.
Animal or cellular models of Dravet syndrome.
Clinical studies involving Dravet patients (e.g., biomarkers, seizure monitoring, natural history studies).
👩🔬 2. Demonstrated Expertise in Epilepsy or Neuroscience
Strong background in neurology, neurogenetics, ion channel physiology, or pharmacology.
Publications in relevant journals (e.g., Epilepsia, Brain, Neurobiology of Disease).
Prior experience with preclinical or translational epilepsy research.
🧬 3. Innovative and Disease-Relevant Proposals
Projects that explore novel therapeutic strategies, including:
Gene therapy (e.g., AAV, ASOs)
Precision medicine approaches
Disease-modifying or seizure-suppressing treatments
Emphasis on bench-to-bedside potential and alignment with DSF’s mission to improve outcomes for Dravet patients.
👩🔧 4. Feasibility and Preliminary Data
Early-stage proof-of-concept data showing rationale for the project.
Clear research design and timeline.
Feasibility of completing aims within 1–2 years.
🧑🔬 5. Early-Career and Independent Investigators
DSF supports both established and early-career researchers.
For early-career awards: demonstrated promise, strong mentorship, and institutional backing are essential.
🤝 6. Collaborative and Translational Orientation
Multidisciplinary projects combining basic science, clinical insight, and therapeutic development.
Partnerships between academia and industry or cross-institutional collaborations.
🏛 7. Institutional Affiliation
Strong research institution or medical center with epilepsy/neuroscience expertise.
Access to relevant infrastructure: animal facilities, EEG monitoring, sequencing platforms, patient cohorts.
🎓 DSF Grant Mechanisms:
Research Grant Awards – up to $200,000 over 2 years.
Postdoctoral Fellowships
Clinical & Preclinical Research Grants
Gene Therapy Research Grants (in partnership with other organizations)
Infrastructure or data-sharing initiatives (e.g., biobank support, patient registries)
Applicants should be affiliated with a research or academic institution (excluding for-profit companies), may be US or foreign based, established in their field, and in good standing with their institution.
