ALA/ALVRE Research Grant

American Laryngological Assocation

The purpose of this award is to support basic, translational, or clinical research projects in laryngology (voice, airway, swallowing), outcomes, and related subjects, and should lead to furthering the fields of laryngology or neurolaryngology.

TERMS

  1. Amount: $15,000 –  Up to $1,000 of the award may be budgeted to cover travel expenses for the principal investigator to present his/her results at the ALA annual meeting.
  2. Period: 12 months, non-renewable
  3. Use of Funds: A detailed budget and a budget justification constitute part of the application and will be evaluated as part of the review process. Funding may not be used to support the Principal Investigator’s salary during the period of the award. Salary for professionals and capital equipment shall be excluded. The ALA will not pay institutional (indirect) costs for this very modest award.
  4. Review: Applications will be reviewed by members of the ALA Research Committee and recommendations submitted to the ALA Council. Recommendations for funding must be approved by the ALA Council.
  5. Notification: The award will be announced at the Annual Meeting. Letters of notification will be sent to the recipient and institution no later than four weeks following the conclusion of the Annual Meeting of the ALA at COSM.
  6. Start Date: The award may be activated as early as July 1 of the year of award, but no later than January 1 of the following year.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1️⃣ Strong Focus on Voice, Airway, or Swallowing Disorders

Funded proposals directly address:

Vocal fold biology and pathology

Laryngeal cancer or airway reconstruction

Neurolaryngology (e.g., vocal fold paralysis, laryngeal dystonia)

Dysphonia, dysphagia, communication-impairment outcomes

Weak applications: ENT-general projects lacking specific laryngeal impact.

2️⃣ High Clinical or Translational Impact

Priority goes to work that:

Improves diagnostic accuracy (imaging, physiologic measurement)

Advances surgical techniques or outcomes

Creates new treatments, biomaterials, or regenerative strategies

Reduces disease burden or improves quality of life

Rule: Think “patient benefit within 5–10 years.”

3️⃣ Feasible Pilot-Scale Scope

Typically 12–24 month timeline

1–2 tightly focused aims

Realistic recruitment or sample availability

Clear milestones and measurable outcomes

Show that you can finish the work and publish it with this funding.

4️⃣ Preliminary Data or Proof-of-Concept

Not always required — but highly beneficial:

Pilot clinical data

Histologic/mechanistic rationale

Feasibility evidence for interventions or imaging techniques

No “fishing expeditions” — reviewers want signal, not speculation.

5️⃣ Strong Investigator Track & Mentorship

Especially for early-career applicants:

Otolaryngology-trained or laryngology-focused investigators

Publications in voice/airway/laryngeal fields

Clear mentorship plan and institutional support

Protected time for research

Career trajectory in laryngology, not just ENT.

6️⃣ Clear Path to Future Funding

ALA often funds stepping-stone studies → NIH, DoD, VA, or other specialty foundation grants.

Make explicit:

Next grant targets (R21, R01, K award etc.)

Data that the pilot will generate

Letters of collaboration from future partners if needed

7️⃣ Methodological Rigor

For clinical sciences:

Validated outcome measures (VHI, stroboscopy scores, acoustic parameters)

Adequate power or feasibility justification

Bioethics compliance, IRB readiness

For basic/translational:

Relevant animal or ex-vivo models (e.g., vocal fold fibroblasts)

Physiologic/mechanical metrics

Precision matters in a small field with high technical standards.

🚫 Common Reasons Proposals Are Not Funded

PitfallReviewer Concern
ENT-broad with weak laryngeal focusStrategic mismatch
Over-ambitious scopeNot feasible with budget/timeline
No clear impact on patient careLacks translational value
Weak mentor/institutional supportHigh execution risk
Vague methods and statisticsPoor rigor or reproducibility

🎯 Winning Strategy Checklist

✔ Central to laryngeal disorders
✔ Strong clinical rationale & innovation
✔ Small, achievable pilot with clear milestones
✔ Solid preliminary evidence
✔ Mentorship + institutional support
✔ Real path to larger funding
✔ Patient outcomes highlighted
✔ Polished and clearly written proposal

Candidates for this award should be otolaryngologists who have completed or are presently in their training at an ACGME accredited program in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. PhDs or Speech Language Pathologists may also apply for this award; however, mentorship or collaboration with an otolaryngologist is required. All investigators must be citizens of the United States or Canada. Previous ALA research grant recipients are eligible to compete for this grant. However, candidates who have successfully obtained funding from a private or federal funding agency for the same research are ineligible. Candidates who have applied for support of the same research from other funding sources, and who are notified of an award from both another agency and from ALA must choose only one of the awards.
