CARRA-Arthritis Foundation Advancing Biosample Collection Award

Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA)

This funding opportunity supports biosample collection within the CARRA network to advance CARRA translational research. The goal is to collect biosamples from patients enrolled in the CARRA Registry, to be used by CARRA investigators for future hypothesis-based research. This mechanism funds the collection of biosamples at CARRA Registry sites utilizing the CARRA Registry biosample consent form. Priority will be given to funded projects.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

When reviewers evaluate CARRA applications, they tend to look for:

1. Direct Relevance to Pediatric Rheumatic Disease

Applications must address a specific clinical or translational question in diseases such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, pediatric lupus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, or vasculitides — ideally leveraging CARRA’s registry or biorepository. CARRA

2. Use of CARRA Registry or Collaborative Infrastructure

Projects that use existing registry data or biosamples (e.g., for comparative effectiveness research) often score well because they align with CARRA’s mission to generate real-world evidence. CARRA

3. Clear, Feasible Research Plan

A well-scoped design with realistic methods and defined milestones boosts competitiveness, especially for pilot and small grant applications. CARRA

4. Investigator Qualifications & Mentorship

For career development awards, evidence of preparation (publications, training) and strong mentorship are crucial predictors of success. Research at UCalgary

5. Collaborative and Multidisciplinary Approach

Grants that involve multiple investigators or disciplines — particularly those that show how team science will yield deeper insights — are viewed favorably. CARRA

6. Potential to Generate Preliminary Data for Larger Grants

Projects that intend to seed future NIH, PCORI, or foundation funding are attractive since they amplify CARRA’s strategic impact. Arthritis Foundation
