Canine Grants - Established Investigators

Morris Animal Foundation

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The mission of Morris Animal Foundation is to bridge science and resources to advance the health of animals. To achieve this mission, we fund hypothesis-driven, humane research projects with high scientific merit and the potential for significant impact. We are a nonprofit organization funded by public support from individuals, corporations, clubs, foundations, and earnings from our endowed funds. Our donors are interested in funding research that results in impactful animal health achievements and benefits both scientific and non-scientific stakeholders including veterinarians, companion animal owners and communities.

Established Investigator: Competitive applicants for this award will have a record of expertise demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications.

AWARD DURATION AND BUDGET LIMITS

Established Investigator maximum project duration is 36 months. There is no limit to the budget request, however we expect the average award to be approximately $100,000.

AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong alignment with Morris Animal Foundation's mission (highest predictor)

This is the most important screening factor.

MAF funds hypothesis-driven, humane animal health research that advances the health and welfare of:

  • dogs (canine health)
  • cats (feline health)
  • horses, donkeys, mules, and ponies (equid health)
  • wildlife/exotic species

Projects focused primarily on human health or agricultural livestock generally fall outside the Foundation's mission and are not eligible.

2. High scientific merit and rigorous study design (very high predictor)

Applications undergo scientific review, and successful proposals consistently demonstrate:

  • a clear hypothesis
  • strong scientific rationale
  • robust methodology
  • appropriate statistical design
  • realistic objectives
  • ethical animal welfare considerations

Scientific merit is one of the primary review criteria used by the Foundation's Scientific Advisory Board.

3. Potential for meaningful impact on animal health

MAF emphasizes research with clear potential to improve:

  • disease prevention
  • diagnosis
  • treatment
  • welfare
  • conservation outcomes

Projects that can lead to practical improvements in veterinary medicine or wildlife health tend to be particularly competitive.

4. Investigator track record appropriate to career stage

The Foundation tailors expectations according to grant type:

Established Investigator Awards

Successful applicants usually have:

  • substantial publication history
  • prior funded research
  • demonstrated expertise in the field

First Award Grants

Strong candidates are:

  • early-career faculty
  • new independent investigators
  • researchers building their first independent program

Fellowship Training Grants

Reviewers look for:

  • strong potential for a research career
  • commitment to animal health science
  • evidence of research aptitude

5. Strong mentorship and training environment

This is especially important for:

  • Fellowship Training Grants
  • First Awards
  • Veterinary Student Scholar programs

Successful applications often include:

  • experienced mentors
  • formal training plans
  • strong institutional support
  • access to appropriate facilities and expertise

Fellowship Training grants are specifically designed to launch new investigators through mentored research experiences.

6. Innovation and pilot-data potential

Pilot Study Awards are intended to support:

  • innovative concepts
  • proof-of-concept studies
  • exploratory research
  • generation of preliminary data

Even in larger award categories, reviewers favor projects that introduce novel ideas capable of accelerating discovery.

7. Compliance with proposal guidelines and animal welfare standards

A surprisingly important predictor.

Applications are first screened for:

  • adherence to RFP requirements
  • eligibility compliance
  • proper formatting
  • animal welfare considerations
  • ethical approvals

Noncompliant proposals may be rejected before scientific review.

ONLY ONE APPLICATION PER PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR IS ALLOWED FOR THIS RFP. However, a PI on one study can be listed as a co-investigator on other proposals. Applicants must demonstrate understanding of the health problem, relevant expertise, methodological strength, and thoughtful consideration of environmental and animal welfare impacts.
