AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Direct relevance to hemophilia, bleeding, or thrombotic disorders (highest predictor)

This is the most important predictor.

WNYBC specifically prioritizes projects that improve:

  • outcomes in hemophilia
  • bleeding disorders
  • thrombotic disorders
  • hemostasis research
  • clotting complications
  • inhibitor formation
  • hemophilic joint disease
  • von Willebrand disease and related disorders

Projects outside these disease areas are less likely to align with the program mission.

2. High likelihood of meaningful patient impact (very high predictor)

WNYBC states that priority will be given to applications with a:

"high likelihood for success in terms of significant impact"

for individuals with hemophilia and related disorders.

Competitive proposals typically demonstrate:

  • improved diagnosis
  • better disease management
  • reduction of complications
  • improved quality of life
  • prevention of morbidity
  • advancement of treatment strategies

3. Strong independent investigator profile

Eligibility requirements make this a major predictor.

Applicants must:

  • hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent
  • demonstrate independent research projects
  • have independent resources
  • provide evidence of preliminary results and/or publications from their own laboratory

This means established scientific independence is heavily valued.

4. Preliminary data and publication record

Unlike some high-risk seed grants, WNYBC explicitly expects applicants to show evidence of prior productivity.

Strong applicants typically present:

  • preliminary data
  • peer-reviewed publications
  • proof-of-concept findings
  • demonstrated expertise in the proposed area

These factors help establish feasibility and likelihood of success.

5. Collaboration with a Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC)

This is one of the clearest published review preferences.

WNYBC specifically notes that priority is given to projects that:

  • include collaborative efforts with a Hemophilia Treatment Center
  • integrate clinical and research expertise
  • connect research directly to patient care

This is a distinctive advantage compared with many other foundations.

6. Training and workforce-development component

Another explicitly stated review criterion is the ability to:

  • provide training opportunities
  • mentor physician-scientists
  • support biomedical researchers
  • strengthen the future workforce in bleeding-disorder research

Applications that include trainees, fellows, or junior investigators may receive favorable consideration.

7. Diversity, health equity, and community impact

WNYBC's mission includes improving:

  • health equity
  • access to care
  • outcomes across diverse populations

Priority is given to proposals that promote diversity and inclusion in research participation, staffing, or collaborations.

8. Feasible translational or clinical research plan

Funded examples have included:

  • genomics studies identifying new coagulation pathways
  • mechanisms of thrombosis and hemostasis
  • inflammatory and metabolic complications in hemophilia

Successful projects generally combine scientific innovation with a realistic pathway to clinical relevance.

The program invites proposals from higher education institutions (public/state controlled, private), and non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations that have a history and track record of serving the community of bleeding and clotting disorders. Principal Investigators/Program Directors (PI/PDs) who may apply are any individuals with the skills, knowledge, required resources, and who can apply through their organization. There is no age requirement, however, applicant must have an MD, PhD, or equivalent; clearly state they have both independent research projects and independent resources; and have preliminary results/and or publications from their independent laboratory. This Award is open to candidates conducting research at a U.S. based not-for-profit institutions by the start date of the award. Priority is given to applicants within HRSA Region II.
