The Intuitive Foundation grant program is accepting applications for Clinical Research Grants related to the impact of robotic-assisted bronchoscopy on clinical care in 2026-2027.
Overview: The purpose of these grants is to support clinical research at non-profit institutions worldwide focused on the effect of robotic-assisted bronchoscopy in the clinical care of patients with pulmonary disease. Successful proposals will study important questions related to the impacts robotic-assisted bronchoscopy on disease diagnosis and or management or patient outcomes.
Available Grants:
Applicants may apply for grant funding with total costs up to $75,000 (US) per project.
Grant funds can be used to support salaries for statisticians, lab technicians, fellows, research coordinators, and other support personnel. Funds can cover equipment, supplies, and/or travel required to support the proposed research project for a period of up to one year. Funding may not be used to support physician salaries.
The Intuitive Foundation has identified key research areas of interest for the 2024-2025 clinical grant proposals. Principal Investigators are encouraged – although not required – to submit proposals that fall into one or more of the following areas:
Clinical Outcomes-Based Research
Research related to clinical outcomes for robotic-assisted bronchoscopy procedures including but not limited to comparative studies between robotics and alternate modalities or therapies. Examples of the clinical impact of robotic assisted bronchoscopy include:
Imaging, Vision and/or Navigational Research
Research focused on enhanced use of advanced imaging modalities and effect on the performance of procedures. Examples include, but are not limited to:
Health Economic and Outcomes Research including Cost-effectiveness and Quality of Life Studies related to Robotic-assisted Bronchoscopy
Research related to local services utilization, clinical and economic burden of the disease, cost of care, and research focused on quality of life or utilities related to care. Examples include:
The Intuitive Foundation strongly recommends that research within this category include a health economist as a part of the research team. Please identify this individual in the capabilities section of the grant submission.
New Procedure Exploration and Development Research
Research focused on the use of robotic-assisted bronchoscopy in conjunction with emerging technologies leading to improved safety or outcomes of patients with pulmonary disease. Please note that research conducted on human subjects may require applicable authorizations or favorable opinions from any relevant authorities, such as governmental and medical institution authorities, prior to funding.
Selection Process: Applicants must first submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) to Propose as detailed below. Grant LOIs will be reviewed and ranked by a selection committee. LOIs reaching a predetermined scoring threshold will be invited to submit a full grant proposal. All LOIs, as well as invited full grant applications, will be reviewed, and scored on the following criteria:
LOIs and full grant proposals will be handled in a confidential manner and will not be distributed beyond the Intuitive Foundation’s grant selection committee. Please be advised that in order to comply with Intuitive Surgical’s Tender Compliance guidelines, organizational names will be shared with Intuitive Surgical’s Tender Department. Due to the expected volume of proposals, the foundation regrets that its committee will not be able to provide detailed individualized feedback on unsuccessful grant proposals.
LOI Guidelines: A LOI to propose should be submitted by all grant applicants. Submissions should consist of five parts:
1. Clear Alignment with the Foundation’s Mission
The strongest predictor is explicit alignment with one or more of the Foundation’s core goals:
Improving patient outcomes through minimally invasive approaches
Advancing surgical education and training models
Promoting equity, access, and diversity in surgical care
Successful proposals clearly state why the project matters for the future of surgery, not just for a narrow specialty.
2. Strong Educational or Clinical Impact
Funded projects typically demonstrate:
Measurable improvements in skills acquisition, training efficiency, or patient outcomes
Relevance to real-world surgical practice
Potential for scalability beyond a single institution
Predictor: Projects with clearly defined outcomes (competency metrics, clinical endpoints, adoption potential).
3. Innovation in Training, Technique, or Care Delivery
Successful applications often include:
Novel educational frameworks (simulation, curriculum redesign, assessment tools)
New models of surgical training or workforce development
Innovative clinical research improving MIS safety, precision, or recovery
Predictor: Innovation that is practical, not purely theoretical.
4. Methodological Rigor and Feasibility
Reviewers favor proposals with:
Clear study design (educational research, clinical outcomes, implementation science)
Appropriate metrics and evaluation plans
Realistic scope and timelines
Overly ambitious or poorly operationalized projects are less competitive.
5. Independence and Scientific Integrity
The Foundation emphasizes:
Investigator-initiated research
Transparency and independence in study design and reporting
Clear separation between research goals and commercial interests
Predictor: Credible governance, ethical oversight, and independence language in the proposal.
6. Investigator and Institutional Capability
Previously funded projects typically involve:
Investigators with demonstrated expertise in surgery, education research, or outcomes research
Institutions capable of supporting training programs or clinical research infrastructure
Early-career investigators are competitive when paired with strong mentorship and institutional backing.
7. Equity, Access, and Workforce Development (Growing Predictor)
Increasingly successful proposals include:
Focus on underserved populations
Training pathways for underrepresented groups
Access to high-quality surgical care in low-resource or rural settings
Predictor: Clear, actionable equity components with measurable impact.
8. Clear Dissemination and Sustainability Plan
Successful applications explain:
How results will be shared (publications, curricula, open resources)
How the program or research will continue after Foundation funding
Predictor: Demonstrated return on philanthropic investment.
Weak connection to minimally invasive or surgical education priorities
Overly device-focused or commercially framed proposals
Vague educational outcomes or poorly defined metrics
Lack of scalability or sustainability
Insufficient independence or methodological detail
| Predictor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Mission alignment (MIS, education, equity) | Core funding priority |
| Clear clinical or educational impact | Demonstrates real-world value |
| Practical innovation | Advances surgical practice |
| Strong methods & feasibility | Ensures deliverability |
| Investigator independence | Protects scientific credibility |
| Institutional & mentorship support | Builds execution confidence |
| Equity and access focus | Increasingly prioritized |
| Dissemination & sustainability | Maximizes long-term impact |
