Medical Education Research Grant

Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada

This grant supports quality research in Canada that will advance the field of postgraduate medical education or continuing professional development. 

Decisions regarding allocation of this grant, ranging from C$5,000 up to C$50,000, are made on an ad hoc basis.

Applicants must disclose any additional associated funding sources if a portion of the project under adjudication is already partially funded. 

Please note applications that are deemed to be strictly program evaluation, quality improvement or quality assurance will be deemed ineligible to receive funding.

Please note we are unable to accept applications involving Indigenous peoples or communities at this time. We are in the process of formalizing an Indigenous Research Grant stream. The purpose of this grant is to build capacity in Indigenous health research and foster community-based research. This funding opportunity is expected to support Indigenous community-based health research that reflects the priorities and values of Indigenous Peoples. In addition to demonstrating scientific excellence (Western, and Indigenous Knowledges), the proposed research approaches and methods must respect Indigenous values and ways of knowing and sharing.  Information about the grant program and timelines for accepting applications will be communicated in the coming months.  We appreciate your understanding.

Submission process and deadline

Applications must be submitted by completing the official online grant application form.   

Applications are due on or before March 13, 2026, before 11:59 p.m. (applicant’s local time).  

Late applications will not be considered. Attachments sent by email will not be accepted and are ineligible to be attached to the application. 

Application process

Each application must include the following

1. A clear explanation of the named Fellow’s role and contributions to the project.

2. Project abstract (300 words maximum) describing the rationale, objectives, study design, methods, analysis and outcomes. 

3. MERG Project Description

For each bullet point listed below for the project description section, the word count is equivalent to approximately 1 page / approximately 650 words).

This should include

  • project objectives, literature and theoretical foundations, and significance to postgraduate specialty medical education or continuing professional development;
  • a summary of methodology and study design;
  • details on data collection and analysis;
  • proposed project schedule and anticipated outcomes/impacts;
  • planned dissemination of research findings, including publications and presentations; and
  • the process for ethics approval (if applicable).

Please note that the project description information is required to be entered in the text boxes provided in the application form only. Any pdf document that is uploaded that includes the project description information will be deemed ineligible to be included in the application for review.

Your application must also include all the documents listed below:

4. A completed copy of the Grant Budget template (you must download and use this template: budget template [.xlsx download]). Once completed, please attach the document. Use of the Royal College Budget Template is mandatory.

5. Reference list

6. Budget justification (review our budgetary guidelines)

7. Letter(s) of support (maximum two, maximum two pages in length per letter) from your division, department or faculty representative.

8. Abbreviated curricula vitae (maximum four pages per CV and 10-point font minimum): principal investigator, co-investigator/s; CVs that exceed this limit will be truncated for review purposes).

CVs should detail  

  • principal and co-investigators’ education, teaching and administrative positions held in the last five years;
     
  • publications; 
     
  • grants received; and 
     
  • any other pertinent training.

9. Copy of research instruments (if available).

10. Letter of approval from Ethics Board or letter of submission for ethical approval (if applicable).

Selection of recipients

The Royal College Education Research Grants Committee and a cadre of expert scholars and researchers assess proposals and identify successful applicants.

Selection is based on an application’s scientific merit and clarity of the proposal, on the proposal’s relevance to the grant’s objective, and on the strength of the research team.

Preference will be given to work that is considered worthy of inclusion in a peer-reviewed publication.

The award and duration

Award

This grant awards amounts ranging from C$5,000 up to C$50,000.

One or more grants are awarded each year. Only one grant per year per principal investigator is awarded.

An amount equivalent to 75 per cent of the grant will be disbursed upon project commencement, and 25 per cent (less open access fees) upon project completion and receipt of a final report. The final report must be sent to the Program Coordinator, Research Grants and Awards, Research and Evaluation Unit, Royal College.  
 

Duration

Applicable to projects of a maximum two years in duration.

Emphasis will be placed on teams that integrate diverse perspectives and expertise, fostering innovative approaches to complex challenges. Such collaborations are essential for advancing research that is both scientifically rigorous and socially relevant, ensuring that outcomes are equitable and broadly beneficial.

It is not necessary to be a physician or Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; however, a Fellow of the Royal College must formally, and meaningfully contribute to the research project.

Individuals who currently hold funding from the Royal College (as a Principal Applicant) are not eligible to receive funding in this competition. They may still supervise a trainee or student and can be a co-investigator on proposals submitted by other PIs. 

Note: an application is considered closed only when the Education Research Grants Committee has approved final submission documents and financial items have been resolved.

Applications must meet contemporary standards of educational research, which include 

  • the relevance of the research question
  • the appropriateness of the research approach
  • ethical review of the submission
  • accountability for funds requested, and
  • the feasibility of successfully completing the project during the funding period.
