BOA Travelling Fellowships

British Orthopaedic Association

The BOA endeavours to provide exceptional educational training opportunities for its members throughout each stage of their careers.

Every year, the BOA offers a number of Travelling Fellowships to its members. We invite applications for funding to undertake periods of additional specialist learning at sites outside your normal working/training location either within the UK or overseas, at one or more centres of excellence to gain knowledge and experience within trauma and orthopaedic surgery. Applicants are encouraged to be innovative in their approaches. For example, using the educational flexible working arrangements, such as less than full time posts, non-continuous attendance dates, or ‘day release’ formats.

We are keen to ensure this opportunity is available to our members this year, but have felt it necessary to make some changes to the scheme, which are outlined in the 2026 Instructions and Advice document.

The fellowship awards are allocated on merit to current BOA Home Associates, Post-CCT members, or SAS Surgeon members. Applicants must be up-to-date with their subscription payments, and Post-CCT members are eligible as long as they have not taken up a Substantive Consultant post or been appointed to one by the closing date of 6th July 2026.

We are grateful to the fellowship sponsors of 2026, as follows:

  • Heraeus (1 fellowship on infection in memory of Andrew Sprowson)

We are also delighted to confirm the SAS Education Fellowship will return for 2026. The BOA invites applications for the SAS Education Fellowship from SAS and LED members for a project of up to 12 months to support their education or career development.

We also recognise the endowments set up through donations and/or bequests from past members Mr Soli Lam and Mr Ram Kumar Chatterjee. We have allocated funds from these endowments (Soli Lam General Fund, Soli Lam Spinal Fund and Chatterjee Fund) to support a number of other fellowships. AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong relevance to orthopaedic and musculoskeletal research (highest predictor)

This is the most important factor.

BOA research funding is intended to improve:

  • Musculoskeletal (MSK) health
  • Orthopaedic treatment
  • Trauma care
  • Surgical outcomes
  • Patient mobility and independence

Projects that clearly address important orthopaedic or MSK challenges align most closely with BOA priorities.

2. Clear potential to improve patient outcomes (very high predictor)

BOA's research strategy emphasizes improving treatment and restoring mobility and independence for patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

Highly competitive proposals usually demonstrate potential to:

  • Improve surgical outcomes
  • Reduce complications
  • Enhance rehabilitation
  • Improve quality of life
  • Advance evidence-based orthopaedic care

Projects with a plausible path to clinical impact tend to be favored.

3. Strong scientific quality and methodological rigor (very high predictor)

Successful applications typically include:

  • A well-defined hypothesis
  • Clear objectives
  • Robust methodology
  • Appropriate statistical planning
  • Feasible recruitment and follow-up strategies
  • Realistic timelines

Although BOA supports innovation, scientific rigor remains essential for competitiveness.

4. Commitment to becoming a research-active orthopaedic surgeon

A distinctive BOA objective is developing clinician-scientists in orthopaedics.

The BOA–ORUK Research Fellowship specifically aims to create a pipeline of research-active orthopaedic surgeons, making investigator development a major review consideration.

Strong applicants often demonstrate:

  • Academic career aspirations
  • Prior research involvement
  • Commitment to combining surgery and research
  • Long-term plans for research leadership

5. Strong mentorship and research environment

Competitive applications generally include:

  • Experienced supervisors
  • Established orthopaedic research groups
  • Access to clinical cohorts
  • Research infrastructure
  • Institutional support

BOA fellowship programs frequently require named supervisors and supportive host institutions.

6. Publication record and prior research productivity

Successful applicants often demonstrate:

  • Peer-reviewed publications
  • National or international presentations
  • Orthopaedic conference abstracts
  • Previous research achievements

For trainee and early-career fellowships, productivity is assessed relative to career stage.

7. Potential to generate future external funding

BOA-supported fellowships often serve as career-development and pilot-funding mechanisms.

Projects that can generate:

  • Preliminary data
  • New collaborations
  • Multicentre studies
  • Future applications to UK funders such as the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) or major charities

are especially attractive.

8. Collaboration and national research impact

BOA actively promotes multicentre and collaborative orthopaedic research.

Applications that involve:

  • Multi-institutional collaboration
  • National datasets
  • Clinical trial networks
  • Cross-disciplinary expertise

often align well with BOA's broader research objectives.
