AI Based Application Success Predictor

1. Strong focus on orthoregeneration and musculoskeletal tissue repair (highest predictor)

This is the most important factor.

ON Foundation grants are specifically intended for projects involving:

  • Orthopedic tissue regeneration
  • Cartilage repair
  • Bone regeneration
  • Tendon healing
  • Ligament repair
  • Muscle regeneration
  • Sports medicine regeneration
  • Orthobiologics
  • Tissue engineering
  • Regenerative medicine for musculoskeletal disorders

Projects outside orthopedic regeneration are generally less competitive.

2. Innovation and ability to answer an important open question (very high predictor)

The Foundation repeatedly states that funded projects should:

  • Test innovative approaches
  • Address important unanswered questions
  • Explore novel regenerative therapies
  • Advance the field of orthoregeneration

Innovation potential is one of the formal review criteria used by ON Foundation review panels.

3. Strong clinical relevance and patient impact (very high predictor)

A recurring theme across ON grants is clinical applicability.

Competitive projects typically demonstrate potential to:

  • Improve healing
  • Reduce pain
  • Restore function
  • Shorten recovery time
  • Improve quality of life
  • Improve orthopedic treatment outcomes

The Foundation emphasizes translational research capable of influencing future clinical practice.

4. Clear hypothesis and rigorous research plan

ON Foundation review criteria explicitly evaluate:

  • Sound hypothesis
  • Clear objectives
  • Appropriate methodology
  • Research protocol quality
  • Ability of the design to answer the research question

Projects with well-developed experimental designs are substantially more competitive.

5. Translational and regenerative medicine orientation

Successful projects often bridge:

  • Basic science
  • Preclinical studies
  • Clinical research
  • Sports medicine
  • Orthobiologics

The Foundation frequently supports translational strategies that move regenerative concepts toward clinical implementation.

6. Early-career investigator development

Several ON programs specifically target young investigators.

Examples include:

  • Kick-Starter Grants
  • Education Grants
  • ON/ORS Orthoregeneration Award

Reviewers often favor applicants who demonstrate strong potential to become future leaders in orthoregeneration research.

7. Publication potential and generation of new evidence

ON Foundation repeatedly emphasizes:

  • Evidence generation
  • Peer-reviewed publication
  • Identification of knowledge gaps
  • New concepts and proof-of-concept studies

Projects expected to produce publishable findings are particularly attractive.

8. Strong interdisciplinary collaboration

Many successful orthoregeneration projects integrate expertise from:

  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Sports medicine
  • Tissue engineering
  • Biomaterials
  • Cell biology
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Rehabilitation sciences

Collaborative teams often have an advantage when tackling complex regeneration problems.

  • Candidates are prior to specialization (“vor Facharzt”)
  • Candidates have a strong interest in orthoregeneration
  • Candidates have not benefited from a similar ON/AGA support program before
