AAPM and the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) are happy to announce a jointly funded research seed grant for Medical Physics Residents and Post-Doctoral Fellows. The goal of the joint seed grant is to advance the field of radiation oncology in novel ways through the support of early-career scientists involved in radiation oncology physics-related research. With this jointly supported grant, both societies aim to help support the next generation of researchers in the field of radiation oncology. Applicants are asked to notify the grant administrator if the same or similar application is submitted to more than one funding source so that the committee can take this into consideration when making final funding decisions. Up to two awards ($50,000 maximum / each) are anticipated. The 2026 award cycle will begin on July 1, 2026 and end on June 20, 2027. This award does not support indirect costs.
Application Requirements:
Please refer to this announcement for specific details on what to submit.
► Application Deadline: March 18, 2026 | 11:59 PM ET
► Decision Notifications Sent: by June 15, 2026
Across AAPM’s competitive opportunities, successful applications typically share these characteristics:
✔ Relevance to Medical Physics
Proposals must align clearly with core areas of medical physics (e.g., imaging physics, radiation therapy physics, dosimetry, quality assurance, safety, clinical applications) and should articulate how the work improves understanding or practice. AAPM
✔ Early-Career Focus (Where Required)
Grants like the Research Seed Funding and Global Seed Funding target emerging investigators within about 10 years of training, emphasising the need for applicants to demonstrate trajectory toward independence and readiness to convert seed data into larger awards. AAPM
✔ Clear, Feasible Project Plans
Strong applications outline specific aims, methodological approaches, deliverables and timelines that are realistic within the budget and period. They also justify resource needs clearly and, when mentoring is relevant, describe mentor roles. AAPM
✔ Innovation & Impact Potential
Panels look for novel, high-impact ideas that address unmet needs or gaps in medical physics research and have the potential to lead to future federal or foundation support. AAPM
✔ Strong Academic or Institutional Support
Especially for fellowship and graduate awards, evidence of academic endorsement, mentoring, and an environment capable of supporting completion of the research strengthens competitiveness. AAPM
✔ Become an AAPM member early: Membership is a prerequisite for most funding. AAPM
✔ Engage mentors: Particularly for early-career seed grants and graduate/postgraduate fellowships. AAPM
✔ Align with research priorities: Tailor proposals to current challenges in medical physics — e.g., imaging optimization, radiation dose reduction, therapy planning innovations. AAPM
✔ Leverage summer/training programs: Undergraduate and early career opportunities like the Summer Undergraduate Fellowship or Summer School can build preliminary experience and networks. AAPM
| Program | Target | Focus | Typical Support |

| Research Seed Funding Grant | Early career researchers | Independent medical physics research | ~$25,000/1 yr AAPM |
| Global Seed Funding Grant | Early career global focus | Internationally relevant research | ~$25,000/1 yr AAPM |
| AAPM/RSNA Fellowships | Graduate students | Tuition/research costs | ~$10,000 AAPM |
| Summer Undergraduate & DREAM Fellowships | Undergraduates | Research experience & stipend | ~$6,000 AAPM |
| Training & Scholarships | Early professionals | Tuition/travel support | Varies AAPM |
| Collaborative Seed Grants (ASTRO-AAPM) | Residents/postdocs | Radiation oncology physics research | ~$50,000 |
Must be a current and active AAPM member at the time of application. Visit AAPM to learn more about membership.
Must show a commitment to a career focusing on physics-related research with a radiation oncology component.
Must work at an institution with a well-established research and clinical career development program and qualified faculty in physics and radiation oncology to serve as mentors.
Must be a physics resident or post-doctoral fellow. Physics residents: your institution must be willing to commit 50% of your time to research for at least one year.
